Does a beautiful (semi) custom knife belong in the safe, or in your pocket every day?

I just bought my first collectible knife:

It's really beautiful. I know it's not custom, but I guess it's semi-custom, and certainly the only possibly collectible knife I own.

Should I carry it every day or should it be a safe queen? What is the opinion here?

i think you should. its a tough decision. if you are sure you won't need to resell it to pay bills, why not treat yourself. if it is a safe queen, no one else will get to admire it but you :) i have owned many many knives i never got to use because it would ruin the value. it is very tough to restrain yourself from using them. its torture !

Use, yes. Abuse, no. I have several customs and I carry and use them. I don't abuse them. I have different knives for work and shop duty that I don't mind if they get beat to hell.

In a metaphysical sort of way, it's not even a knife until it cuts something. Pocket it, use it, enjoy it.

It's your knife - it "belongs" precisely where you choose. I have many knives that I use and a great many more that I don't. I enjoy them all.

Exactly, the best use for a knife is the use that gives the owner the most pleasure, whether it be cutting something or hanging on a wall.

I put my knives to practical use whenever i can. Try to keep my collection small and non overlapping so no knife has to sit too long. If I am to look for toys just to put in the safe there are other options

Is it for show or is it for blow?

You need to decide if it is for collecting or using.

You need to draw the line. I have blades that are only for my collection and all others go to work.

Why did you buy it? Were you thinking it would be a good investment? Or were you thinking how cool it was? (And I think it is VERY cool!). If it's an investment then stick it away. Otherwise use that beauty! Don't abuse it . . . but use and enjoy it! Just my opinion!

Looks semi gentleman-ish

I would carry in semi formal settings

OP: You use the word 'collectible' twice in your query. In any collection of significance, value is determined through condition. Pristine vs. used is a big curve.

Collectible assumes a thought to retain or gain value. So, if collectibility is your priority, then leave it in the safe.

Now: Real talk. What you purchased appears to be a high quality mid-tech knife (You said so yourself).

Collectibility, in my opinion, would be marginal at best and potentially loss-producing at worst, even if pristine. I'd think there are more satisfying ways to enjoy that knife than watching it gain(?) or lose value in a safe....

...Such as USING that fine knife!

Now, the rules change dramatically when you start purchasing upwards of $1000, $4000, and $10,000 dollar knives. USING a $10,000 knife? Ummm, there are others (like yours) which would do the same job and give great satisfaction, without cutting the value in half. (note pun!) ;)

Welcome to BF. Welcome to Collectible knives, too! :D I own plenty.

Jim (Who is highly suspicious that a first post of this nature would not be a shill for this brand. I hope I am wrong.)

In fairness this knife is more intriguing than I had thought. The steel is part of a remnant of a sunken warship?

Boker Tirpitz Damascus

Pocket knife by Boker. Especially for Boker, Norwegian divers have retrieved parts of the special armor of the Tirpitz, from the Fjord. These pieces of living history are being exclusively forged by our Damascus forger to an extraordinary Damascus steel with an exciting background. The pattern "Great Pyramids," with more than 300 layers, adorns the mighty 4" blade, and makes this piece the highlight of any collection.

By no means is it 'Custom and Handmade', but I'll allow that to a newcomer.

Jim

Thanks to everyone for the responses, which firmly are on the side of "use it and enjoy it".

You're right. It was made to cut. Well, 80 years ago, the steel was made for war.

Yes, certainly. Mine has a serial number over 1,000 so these will never be rare. I didn't buy it as an investment. I have a few more knives, all from Benchmade. This is certainly the most expensive knife I've ever had, although I realize that, compared to real custom knives, this is a "cheap" production knife. For me, spending > $500 on a knife seems like a lot.

Hehe, Boker is a big company, it doesn't need me to shill for them! I have nothing to do with them, except I bought one of their knives.

Yes, a famous ship that was very difficult to defeat. They had to bomb it many times to finally defeat it.

By no means is it 'Custom and Handmade', but I'll allow that to a newcomer.

I agree, I guess it would be accurate to call it a limited production knife.

It certainly is beautiful! It's the only Damascus thing I own.

I will carry it.

My everyday carry knife is a Benchmade Barrage. It's a great knife and I certainly do use it. But it's not beautiful. I'll put this Boker in rotation with it.

And thanks to everyone for the responses.

Nice knife. Carry it.
I have one custom and carry it all the time. I don't abuse it but use it every day.
I am waiting for my 2nd custom and it cost me 1 and 1/2 of my monthly salary but I will carry it for sure. I bought them both to spoil myself little. I chose materials so I can carry them (CF, Titanium, modern steel,...).
Maybe, if it is custom with spectacular wood and San Mai then it would go to safe.

Its no doubt a solid Böker - You should use the snot out of it.

As its made from steel of the battleship TIRPITZ, it will no doubt do stellar service.

One can discuss just how tasteful it is to use steel from what could have (should have?) been a war memorial considering the Allied deaths caused by the Tirpitz and not least the app 1000 lives lost when the battleship rolled over during bombardment and trapped its crew in the hull.

I will omit going into gory detail in regards to how German ships in Norwegian fjords were chopped up for the valuable steel and how the remains of the many dead crew were unceremoniously shoveled out.

If one is not bothered by that (and I suspect most dont know nor care), then Ill leave that up to the buyer/user. I assume it would have a special significance for a German and thats okay.

I find the knives made from Leopard (tank) steel somewhat interesting.
