Does a bowie need a pommel?

I have a bowie that I am working on and the handle is a beatiful piece of walrus ivory. Do I need to add a pommel? It looks great without one, but a pointed pommel might be nice. It is a hidden tang knife. Can I finish it without one if it is an art piece?
Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck,

A flat metal piece (or one that fits around) the pommel area would be nice to protect the ivory from getting cracked from a drop or an accidental bang.

Personally, I would not prefer an pointed pommel on the end of a using or long fighting knife. Either way, it would just be in the way and a danger to the wielder.
