Does a knife make the man?

For some un logical, irrational reason, not sure but heavily suspect it's a Scots Irish thing that goes deeper than worrying about a 401k, is I have to have a big Bowie fighting, scalping, hunting survival knife or I don't feel complete. I worry and dream of a perfect spearpoint primitive bowie more than a modern retirement fund. Am I crazy or do others have the same nagging reacurring thoughts? I'd go see a shrink but he or she would call the cops.

Disclaimer: I have no real use for a scalping knife rather it would be be reassigned as a camp onion chopper.

You can have everything you want if you want it bad enough. And i have these haunting thoughts of needing the perfect knife. Not into big fixed blades though more of the perfect 4 inch folder type.

My favorite uncle whom I take after was a bit of a rogue adventurer, a Texas historian, writer and as some described him a Texas Hemingway. He was known and admired by wealthy politicians and honest working men alike and would share a drink with anyone who had class.
When he died fighting cancer he had only his guns, books and his collection of knives including Randalls including a beautiful 12-9 staghorn Bowie as well as other large knives. Those were the most important things he hadn't parted with or handed to friends, relatives.
I think this might be a genetic thing.

Its human nature. Look at humans compared to every other living thing on this planet. Humans want, we get bored of even the most perfect things just because it becomes routine. I feel like you wouldnt be normal if you didnt grow attached to your items and want better things for yourself. You can plan for the future all you want but if you sacrifice the present for the future you will never be happy. Save for your future, but that future might not come the way you planed so you have to enjoy and live for now too.

With all the unisex and metrosexuals out there I'm sometimes discouraged that there are so few real men left anymore. Your uncle sounds like the real deal.

A real man doesn't need any particular knife or other material object to make him a man. He just is.

This is my opinion right here. All the guys who go around saying how big of a man they are are so far away from being a man they mine as well be a adolescent girl. The real men are the ones who are humble and others are the ones who say they are a man.

Yep.

Dunno. But you could get a fair bowie for what it would cost you to go to the shrink .....That would be my plan :D

Don

Probably can get a nice bowie for what a shirnk charges for one single session. Let alone the multiple weekly sessions they would suggest that you take in order to cure this "unhealthy and unnatural addiction" that you have that they will in some way for whatever reason try to link to "deep seated childhood depression and being neglected by your parents"

Seeing as how this isn't in W&C my short answer is no. I've seen many a Bad a** knife in the hands of a total fool, (just go to any gun show, you'll find 'em) it didn't make them any cooler.

Like any tool it's not the tool that makes the man but the man that makes the tool...

Best advice so far!

Why not give an offer on Your late Uncle's Randall 12-9!

Mikael

So what is a person that has to go around scrambling for a tool to perform a basic task that their hands simply can't do, and they have no tool for such? Like bypassing zipties and opening tightly taped packages?

That type of person is what we call ill-prepared.

The Dude knows...Walter probably does too.
