Does America hold the Edge?

Just out of curiosity, is the US way ahead of the rest of the pack as far as knives (custom and others) are concerned?
Ever since I became interested in knives and all its accessories, I have not come across any country that has made so many breakthroughs concerning knives and its related technology.
Perhaps I am mistaken but I honestly have not seen any country outside America that has such a highly developed industry.
One thing I do know, the US knife knuts really love their stuff with a passion unrivalled elsewhere.
I believe there are some countries in Southeast Asia that are trying to play "catch-up" with the US concerning this matter. Some have made great progress but they are nowhere close to the level of sophistication found in US.
In the final analysis, it is great to know where all of us can get great knives even though they can cost a bomb. Currency exchange rates are seldom fair!

As far as custom knives are concerned the US is great, but other countries have people that are just as good. Maybe not as many, but just as good none the less. I think that US factory knives are the best. More money than the Asian knives, but darn well worth it.

It's nice to hear those coments coming from those that do not live here in the U.S. There are of course many wonderful craftsman from around the world but I do think you will find that when Americans do produce a product(and not just knives) they tend to produce some of the highest quality in the world due in part to their pride and the fact that the democratic entrepreneurial system allows us to be well compensted for such fine efforts. My brothers to the north in Canada are often shortchanged as such high taxation reduces one's motivation. And did I mention that we really like our knives.

Hi Robow,

I agree with you that your Canadian brothers are getting the short end of the stick. But there are a few very bright ones among them.
Take Lightfoot, for example. I have handled his creation and it leaves a big smile on my face. A wonderful knife with some real fine finishing touches.
His achievements should pave the way for more skilful Canadians to venture into this lucrative field.

I also think that right now America holds the Edge and I think it is due to mainly two factors.
1) this is a very diverse and dynamic country: the cultural diversity provides a strong driving force for change and competition, which are necessary for new inventions/designs to be realized and accepted.
2) this is a very rich country with a lot of consumers who could afford to buy even more expensive knives.

Another reason I think American knifemakers are some of the best in the world is the pride they take in the work they do. It is not just a job, but a passion, and it shows.
