hello community! I was just wondering if anybody here shares the same passion as I in art. Sculptures? Painters? I usually use the traditional markers, and color pencils, and I'm starting to use Photoshop. I'm also going to be practicing some clay sculptures soon.

Here's some of my stuff, please post some of yours too.

and 2 photoshop paintings

critiques are welcomed too!

Hey there! I was wondering when someone like you would pop around!

They aren't as good as yours but I think that they are at least a little bit good

I love all forms of art. I used to draw, paint and sculpt a lot. I also write poetry and prose. I ended up transitioning from those into photography, partly because it's easier to get paid as a photographer than as a draughtsman, painter, or sculptor. I got busy enough as a photographer that the rest fell by the wayside. I do consider photography to be an art form. Here's some of my stuff:

I'll spend my retirement as sculptor.

I have doodled and sketched since childhood. Have a fair hand for caricature; I've drawn several of my fellow coppers.
One turned out so well I turned it into a full-blown portrait, and the family displayed it at the funeral when he passed. (kind of proud of that one...)
I dabbled in serious painting for a while, and small-scale sculpture. Have put up stuff at local art shows and sold a few pieces.
However, this is extremely time-intensive, and very difficult to manage alongside of being a full-time police officer.

Lately, I've turned my creative juices to producing musical instruments. Cigar-box guitars, and a banjo. I painted a landscape scene on the banjo....I'll try to put up a pic or two.

wow thanks for sharing the art! Hand studies are very fun to draw, especially with charcoal.

Evolute, those are awesome pics, I consider everything art if they look cool to me. You got any pics of your sculptures?

Phill, those are amazing paintings, I'm still learning in Photoshop, got any tips for blending?

O yea, I'm currently studying Game Art and Design in the Art Institute, so most of my stuff is creatures, characters....etc

Thanks and here's my tips for blending.

On a seperate layer paint in the area you want. If it's going to be darker that the color behind it go a tone or two darker than you think it should be. If it's going to be a highlight make it a tone or two lighter than you think. After the area is down, under the Filter menu go to Blur> Gaussian Blur and dial in the right amount of diffusion. Next from the Pallets click on Opacity and reduce the opacity until it's the tone you need and blended to look natural.

It takes practice and a couple of steps, but it does become easier and easier, the more you do it.

Taurn, email me if you would like to see a complete .PSD file of the Rachel painting with all of the layers.

Phil, thats a great painting. I used to do mainly comic book heroes, and severely limited myself. After a while, I stuck to a certain style, a blend of Jim Lee and Linsner. No, I was nowhere near as good. I've got a Kabuki portrait I copied from an advertisement. BTW, I used to work 16-18 hour days, and made sure I filled at least one page in a sketchbook. I am lucky if I have doodled about five pages in the past four years. Just came across some old sketchbooks.

you dabble? That aint dabbling!! :D That is way too much detail for me to handle. How much time you put into one? That mural is my favorite, all the details look like simple shapes, but it would take me months to finish something like that!

Silenthunter, I've done a little work on Comic book heros, and they sure are fun to do. The rendering of the colors and shades is simpler than paintings that I do. The drawing and posing the figures is a lot more complex, and doing the ink (black outlines) is an art all in itself. In fact in comics that you buy those three disciplines are done by three different artists. I'm pretty sure the type in the balloons is done by a fourth person. Really hard for one person to be real good at everything.

Taurn, did you get my email with the Rachel file?

Phil, when I thought I would have a shot in comics, I remember that there was a "penciller, inker, colorist and letterer" for most comics from DC, Marvel and Image. The only one I get is Hellboy these days. I believe that they have several coloring services out there, lettering software etc. I used to be really into that, almost started a zine too.

For the last 28 years I have made my living working as a sculptor carving ancient bone and ivory.
This photo is of a eagle I carved from whale bone and ivory this summer.

I do Rat Fink / Cartoon type art. Mostly sketching with bic pens. Its great to see others works posted.

I will see if I can digg some of stuff out and scan a few. Our kids take all my time now so most is a few years old. Its cool to get in your own world and put the pen to paper. When your done you take a step back and look at it, and its like you don't remember doing it. Well I do that anyways. :o

I do exactly the same thing. I'm so involved with the step by step process of building the painting, that when I look at the list of layers I often say, "Wow, that's a lot of work". When i feel the painting is finished, I'm often too intimidated to start the next one. That's why I'll often go for 3 to 5 years before starting a new one. It's dumb, I can only wonder what my paintings would look like by now if I worked at it every day.

I hate to admit it, but I've done exactly the same thing with my guitar playing. I'll pick it up once every ten years and basically relearn everything all over again, develop the callouses and build the muscle memory. Like I said DUMB.
