Does anybody else stop on the rough side of the leather?

I made a 4"x16" strop a few months back with the rough side of the leather up. This is my first strop, and I didn't have any large strips of leather that was not marked up or cut on the smooth side. I've been using cromium (sp?) paste on it and have been having great results. All of the strops I've seen use the smooth side. Would I get even better results if I made one with the smooth side up or do others use the rough side as well?

If I'm stropping a convex edge I use rough leather. For beveled edges you should be using the smooth side of the leather.
