Does anybody use tapered buffer spindles? Pros or cons? I found a near new Baldor grinder/buffer at a garage sale today, cheap, I removed the wheels and housings, I want to make it a buffer and these sounded pretty cool. What does everyone else use and where do you get your extension arbors? Thanks

I have kind of the "knifemaker's standard" of Baldor buffers.... 3/4 hp, 1800 rpm.... And I use the tapered spindles on mine.

Pros- It makes it VERY fast/easy to change out wheels.

Cons- You're a little limited in wheels compared to a pass-through arbor.

I did, however, use some pass-through buffs for several years on the tapered spindles... Eventually the hole wears out and the buff just slides up onto the shaft.

I don't use my buffer much at all anymore, but it's nice to have it when I do need it.

All right. Yeah I noticed the small selection but it does seem easier to change. Thanks guys.

I use them almost exclusively, you will find most jewelers do
look for accessories in jewelers supply catalogs

I use one too and you can stiffen the wheels in the center with a bit of superglue and this will help with the wheel creep.
Thanks,

I use them and love them!!!

Start with a 1/2 inch hole in the wheel. It will never wear out.

Can't imagine being without them now.

I use the buffers that go on the threaded shaft. Anyone know where I could get some extensions that had machine threads on the ends. I could make some but, the left hand threads would be a real pain.

Tapered shaft spindles are great for wheels up to 6", beyond that you should go with a threaded shaft and collars. The shaft adapters that Lon showed are standard, and can be purchased most anywhere. Try to get a good machined adapter (you get what you pay for).Ax Sunshadowe said, they are the norm in the jewelery industry.

Why only 6" Stacy? I've been using them on my 8" Baldor for years with nothing but great results?
