I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the custom and handmade knives.

Do any of you that have bought really nice $500+ fancy knives used them? The way that they are constructed, can you put them in frequent hard use scenario?
What got me thinking about this was looking at Claudio's San Mai Kukri. If you bought something similar, would you ever use it, or just keep it as a "wall hanger/safe queen"?
I know you can buy cheaper alternatives and use them as hard use blades, and I know there are many options out there.

Do any of you have any fancy custom user pics?

Would you ever use a blade like this?

I don't buy them, but believe most of the good makers work could take a lot of punishment. I suspect few of Claudio's edges meet anything harder than paper. Nor do those of most other high enders. There are just too many great beaters on the market at beater prices.

A few people out there will drop a large on a blade and abuse it, but it's a very exclusive club. I theorize most of those knives are handled and loved like a brand new girl friend (boy friend for the ladies).

If I had the money I'd buy one of his blades they are works of art, there are a few reviews of people bangin on his blades and they take it well, hopefully next year after taxes I will get one... Will I use it?...... Idk they are just so nice, but I have complete faith it could take it

Of course you being a Busse man wouldn't you drop 600 on a big ole chopper and beat on it?

Yes, I've used every knife I owned. Custom or production. (albeit I stopped buying customs a while back)

As much controversy that surrounds Noss's videos, they give me great confidence in what Busses can handle. If I knew a knife like Claudio's could stand up to it, I'd buy one and beat the crap out of it for sure.

I have 2 Robert Carter Customs that I have used. One not so much, But I actually carry the folder.

That's all I do use :)

Yes I've packed high end knives in many remote hard use locations

A properly made custom will out perform most blades out there

A piece like this I would bet my life on much more than any production knife

I have work from Claudio and he is a wonderful Smith and the price of his knives is a steel :) get it

This Bagwell can take a bend like this and return

What brought me to custom knives 30 + years ago was a quest for higher performance in a blade

Production knives have come along way but it is very hard to beat a good differentially heat treated blade by a master craftsman

I'd say go for it, only thing that would worry me is the handle material depending of its natural or not, I doubt too many stabalized naturals can take it like g10

The handle on that Khuk is I believe Micarta

I know technically it is a "fighter" but how do you think a bowie like this Steingass would hold up to camp chores?

I don't know I have not used that makers work

I don't think a sub hilt fighter would make a great camp knife thou

I have my first custom on order right now and I plan to EDC it. I don't buy anything that I'm not going to use and I don't believe in safe queens.

Personally? No.

I carry almost all of my knives, but they very rarely see any use (aside from a few dedicated users, but those aren't customs). When it comes to custom knives, I am a collector. I find no reason to put the knives that I have invested large sums of money into to use. They make me smile, to fondle or carry or just to own, but I see no reason to use one of my customs over one of my production knives. I have far less expensive knives for that very purpose. All that being said, if someone wants to use their custom knives, then more power to them. I certainly wouldn't do it, but those that would are in for a treat when using a knife made by hand by a master.

I don't believe in safe queens either, but then I don't usually abuse my knives either. I have several $500 customs and use them all! Here are several "fancy" customs that are in my rotation.

I am positive that they can take A LOT more abuse than I give them!
