Does anyone carry a knife at the beach and if so what kind of blade and how do you clean it afterwards? Also do you have rust issues?

Always carry my Salt I at the beach. Just rinse it clean. As it is H1 i never have a problem with rust.

I like to take my Khuk and Wetterlings LHA. Takes care of all my chopping needs while at the beach. :D:D:D:D:D

But seriously tho, no saltwater around here but I carry my EDC while at one of the great lakes beaches. usually not on me, as it looks a little strange to have a folder clipped to your shorts but its in my gear somewhere.

I am thinking about taking a BM 520 sbk and a Chris Reeve Green Beret into salt water. Do you think there might be problems if the knives are exposed to salt water for about 12 hours without being cleaned?

Can't say I've spent time at the beach in a really long time, but if I were to do so tomorrow, I wouldn't hesitate to bring one (or more) of the following knives that I own: yellow Mini Grip, Mini Pika, Rescue Stryker. My Presidio would probably do fine as well, or Resistor, for that matter. But the Rescue Stryker seems particularly resistant to rust, and the others should hold up just fine as well.

For 12 hours, it would be best if you could rinse the knives off periodically with non-salt water. With the BK1 coating, I wouldn't worry much about the Presidio (except maybe the Axis springs). Can't speak for the Chris Reeve, as I've never owned nor handled one.

As others have stated, a Spyderco Salt would be ideal. I do hope to own one myself one day. The only thing I don't like about them is the lock, but it should be worth it just for the steel alone.

I've taken a VG10 Delica 3 and a 440C mini-Grip to the ocean with me and even into the water. Had no problems with either one. I just rinsed them in fresh water each evening and re-applied Break-Free to metal parts when I got home 5 days later.

I just spent a week on the beach with my SAK (I didn't take it to the ocean).
So far no problem.

Yes, I always carry a folder at the beach. I was carrying a Spyderco Salt 1. But now, I have a custom to fill that duty now. I DO swim with it too. I swim in the ocean with it.

Spyderco Dragonfly has survived many days swimming in the Gulf with just a quick rinse and dry when I get home

As Bearcut pointed out, when carrying your folder at the beach, put it in the FRONT of your Speedos, not the back. A large trapper style has the best ergonomics for this type of carry.

When I go to the beach I carry whatever I am EDC'ing that day. If I go in the water, the knife stays on the shore. No special knife care needed.

I just bring some sort of EDC either on me or in my bag/gear. SAK, CS Voyager, Kershaw or Spyderco. Bever took one swimming in salt water but your question seems to point directly to spyderco's SALT line. Supposedly no steal is truly "rust free" but they say it is.

Grew up on the beach and work and play around sea water on a daily basis. My pocket knife doesn't get used where it's going to get wet with sea water, even with carbon steel it's no problem. Only knives that get wet with sea water are my fillet knife and dive knives, and those get rinsed and dried religiously after use. Just good knife care, keep them dry and clean with a little light oil on occasion and no problem. It's not even something I've ever given any thought to with knives and sea water being a part of daily life ;)

I don't usually carry a folder when I go to the beach. When I go to the beach I'm not far from a fishing rod and this is what I carry.
