Does anyone EDC a huge SAK?

Just wondering about this. A friend of mine has the biggest Victorinox model, the XL or whatever they call it now. You know, the one with the socket set built in. Well whenever he pulls the thing out I start laughing uncontrollably. I mean, it's gigantic, weighs a ton, and cost almost $200. Whether or not it's a good knife I think it's hilarious.

Does anyone here carry these things? If so, why do you like it? I'm curious. The thickest SAK I've ever carried is a 4-row, or more often a smaller 3-row. I actually prefer single-blade locking knives (should be getting a good upgrade soon) for most days anyway.

The point being I can't stand thick, bulky knives. If I want a toolkit I'll carry one with me. Just can't picture lugging around a pocketknife that probably has a Bridgeport milling machine in there somewhere.

I have one of those, the Victorinox SwissChamp XLT. It basically sits in my collection as a cool thing, but I don't carry it around. It doubles up as something useful for my disaster preparedness stockpile because of all the functions it has in one unit.

For an EDC SAK, I use the more nimble Victorinox Fisherman.

When I think I might need a screwdriver, I carry around my cybertool. I've never really seen the use for SAKs, personally. Was a huge fan of them in my youth though, have ~20 of them, various models.

I have carried the SwissChamp XLT for a couple years now. Fantastic knife. Best part is that the pouch is "pager size" - raises no eyebrows whatsoever. It's now attached to my Maxpedition bag instead of my belt, but since that goes wherever I go, and I do use it everyday, I consider it an EDC.

I've carried a Victorinox Super Tinker in one of those brown pouches on my belt. It's not massive but still good-sized. I rarely carry it anymore unless I have a specific need for one or more of the tools.

I went to a vocational high school and studied Practical Electricity and apart from the tools we were given, I used to EDC a Champ and carried it in a belt pouch. Since the Swisstool wasn't born yet and Leathermans were hard to get by where I came from, the Champ performed pretty well. Wasn't too heavy, too bulky or too anything associated with this SAKs this big.

After those 4 years, I still carried it for 3. Now, I just carry a Huntsman and keep a complete toolbox and a Swisstool CS in the car 'just in case'.

BTW, Lavan, I think the word you are looking for is flail . ;)

As much as I like SAK's I think there is a stopping point.

Personally I think about the largest one that is still good is either the Ranger (5 layers) or the Champion (6 layers).

I think all the ones that are like almost 2 inches wide are retarded and useless.

I mean if you need all that crap get a multi-tool. :)

I think the Huntsman (4 layers) is about the best around. Everything you need, and nothing you don't.

My Son(active duty Marine Corps) is carrying a jumbo sized Victorinox Mauser model with him while he's on duty in Iraq for the next 5 months.

BTW, Lavan, I think the word you are looking for is flail .

B'gawd, yer right. I've been misusing "mace" all my life. I remember thinking "ball and mace" but "flail" is definitely the correct one.

I thank ya.

My ignorance has been diminished today. That's always a good thing.

:)

I carry the new Huntsman with the white LED. I have a Swiss Champ and Swiss Champ XLT, but they are more of a novelty thing. I just keep them around the house. Sometimes I'll take the Swiss Champ out on the rare occasion, but I usually grab my Swiss Tool first. I don't even show the XLT to people as a conversation piece as I try to be modest with my "luxuries". :)

I used to carry a SwissChamp (along with a bunch of other knives, naturally) before I got my first multi-tool. The SwissChamp now is used at home almost daily, though.

I realize that at some point they get ridiculous, but once they get past that point, they become cool again because they are so "over the top." Someday I'll get one of those mega monsters (my biggest is a Wenger tool chest).

I think they should do a new model each year with One More Blade/Tool each year and just keep going!
