Does Anyone Else Here Have Mutant Wasps In Their Backyard ?

No not mutant as in wasps the size of cars, mutant as in nothing will kill them. I swear I've emptied out at least 2 cans of Rid-A-Bug on at least three separate nests on the side of the house and only one is completely gone but the other two are still housing wasps. I spray the nest and it kills like a few wasps but the rest still live . Does anyone else run into problems like this, if so, is it the spray or the bug ?

Andrew

Both. Insects develop resistence to pesticides over time, and most of the really effective insecticides have been outlawed for being environmental hazards.

Wasps aren't bugs... get some wasp & hornet spray. If that doesn't work, as a last resort dump some gasoline on the nest & torch it. Have a fire extinguisher handy if you have to go that route.

Nest in tree or on building? Wasps don't respond well to bug killer, get wasp killer. If that doesn't work, get Diazanon (sp?) powder and a powder sprayer. Stick the sprayer as close to the mouth of the nest as you dare, give it a good dose and run like heck!

A little gasoline and a match work wonders, tho...

They make wasp and hornet spray that will shoot a steam 20ft,I've used it a lot we have some real nasty ones around here in the summer.Black Flag makes the one that I like best,it is watery and will make a mess,I usually wash it right off the siding if the nest is on the house.I've used cheaper sprays and some come out of the can like foam,a quick shot will cover a 6in nest and it kills quick. If you use the foamy stuff on a windy day, don't try to shoot it to far and pay attention to wind direction.

Wasp killer. Wait until late evening before spraying (cooler. They come home to roost. Docile)

get some starting fluid. knocks the tar out of them in a heartbeat. do it at night if you can.

Go to your local auto parts store (or Wal-Mart) and buy some Brake Cleaner. That stuff will kill anything.

Good luck on that one. Diazinon, Dursban and Cygon are all organo-phosphate family chemicals which have been illegal to manufacture or sell for several years now. They did work well, though. Probably why they were banned. I took a few bottles of Dursban home when we had to stop selling it at the nursery, so I still have an emergency supply.

Slap the side of the nest with an open palm. Challenge them to come out and fight! Swat them as they respond. Repeat as necessary.

My first choice is also the Black Flag stuff.

I buy that stuff by the case, so I always have some on hand, and it works almost as well as Black Flag.

Any time you shoot any fluid up into the air, wear eye protection, the kind that seals all the way around your eyes. It only takes a slight breeze.

I find three or four wasps nests under the eves of my house each spring. The trick is to be vigilent -- look every day -- and catch them when they're just getting started. As previously noted, do it in the evening after they've gone to bed. I just use the cheapie wasp spray stuff from Home Depot and it works just fine.

That 20ft spray from Black Flag works better than anything I've ever tried. We get paper wasp nests under the overhangs all around the house. One quick soak - whole dead nest.

Now, the black widows we have around here survive anything. The most powerful spray poison I can find just makes them drunk. So I spray them, then they're stupid enough to smush. I once did the wd-4 and a bic lighter flame thrower on one. It dropped to the ground... then uncurled itself and started limping away. Them things are SuperBugs.

The best and most effective I have found is to take a quart pistol-spray pump bottle,

fill it almost all the way up with WATER except the last 1/2 - 3/4 inch, then fill the rest of the way with Dawn dish soap.

Tip bottle back and forth to mix.

Put on stream spray.

I just took out 15 last Friday from the umbrella on the deck (it was cool and they were trying to stay warm in the folds of the fabric).

The fluid gets into their respiratory tracts, and suffocates them.

Plus, environmentally friendly (I didn't want a lot of chemicals where the nieces and nephews play).

For the couple nests along the roofline, I bought a Mega-Blaster-type pump squirt gun, and filled the resivoir with the same mix, and took them out.

Not quite as dramatic as flaming arrows, lit spray torches or the like, but definitely effective.

Also, I go out at night when they are resting, and use a light and mirror to see where their nests are under the deck, then come back and spray the heck outta them.

Yeah man, thats the kind im using, its called Rid-A-Bug but it was a spray intended for wasps and hornets, I swear dude I've sprayed at least two cans worth and the nests are not only still lively, I saw more wasps on one and what looked like new eggs . Gonna try to use Raid this time instead, hopefully that'll do the trick. It's a little tricky to get it directly cuz it's on the second story of the house but I'll figure something out. Thanks for helping me out on this guys.

You could cord-wrap a couple of sewing machine needles and fight 'em one-on-one, hand to hand.. :D

I had a problem with wasps nesting behind the gutter of my garage. The gutter is about 10' long and open on both ends. I waited until evening and shot a stream of 'Wasp & Hornet Killer' sold in the local ACE hardware store in both ends. The wasps just poured out of both ends onto the ground. Within minutes I had a pile of dead wasps on the ground. That was over 2 years ago and I haven't had any wasps come back. Good luck with your "mutants"!
