i have been working on a friends computer that he bought at a yard sale which was infected really bad. there are no mother board driver discs so i have been trying to salvage the os. after getting the system somewhat cleaned up enough so i can access c drive i managed to get rid of all but a few problems. in c drive/windows/temp folder/_avast4_ there was a file named webshlock. i have tried uninstalling avast in hopes of getting rid of it but that didnt work. i ran cureit, spybot, stinger, ad aware, and a few other programs i have with no luck. also a file named mprexe.exe is infected with
OPASERV.T virus which i havent been able to get rid of. has anyone else dealt with these 2 problems before? i found out the hard way that the webshlock file can be transferred by jumpdrive from one system to the other and wont show up in a scan prior to opening the jumpdrive. i want to keep fdisk and formatting the systems as a last resort. if anyone else is running avast, check your temp folder out and see if the file is present. you can also do a search if you dont want to venture into your windows folder.

I can't answer your specific question, but I work on friends' computers too and have been through similar epic problems. Most of the time it's just easier to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS from scratch. I've never had too much trouble finding the necessary drivers online, which I usually burn to a CD and give to the computer owner for next time.

Good Luck,

One handy program to use is hitman 2 pro. install it then boot to safe mode w/networking and run it. I would set the settings up to your preference before running, it will download, install, configure, and run many of the best current AV/spyware programs all automated(besides accepting licenses, but you can set that to auto accept in the settings as well)

In terms of completely cleaning a machine it often involves digging through the registry and can still be VERY tough to completely clean if it is bad enough.

There are some other but I have to run so I will fill in some other advice later.

i have hitman 2 pro already and was thinking of using it earlier but never did. i would prefer to find something to clean the system instead of having to reformat the drive in case the problem ever comes back. in the meantime i sent avast tech support an email and i hope they can come up with a fix. they are pretty good about things like that. i'll post the fix when and if i find one.

i used to use avg but it let me down too many times. avast hasnt failed me as often as it did. if i picked up something with avast running it usuallly my fault.

Richard, I am running Avast and have webshlock in my temp folder but it has zero bites. Is that what yours looks like?

yes it is. i'm going over to a friends who runs it too. i sent an email to avast tech support and they suggested i get windows defender. i downloaded and ran it but the scan came up clean. i have another system with xp pro that is my backup system. it has avast also but no webshlock file anywhere. i'll figure it out i hope and let you know.

i was told that the file was probably part of avast and to leave it alone so i guess thats what i'll do.

I use avast, and it has never let me down.

A couple of weeks ago I was sent to a site with a trojan, avast caught it and I went back three times trying to understand what was going on, (the site was a recommended virus scanner from a forum), avast kept me protected.

After I thought about it, I had to laugh at how less computer paranoid I have become over the years.

just reloaded the os on a computer a friend bought at a yard sale and installed avast. i guess webshlock is a valid file since it appeared in the folder after rebooting the system which has yet to be connected to the net.
