Does Anyone Else Sharpen This Way?

I have a Schrade Honesteel that I got back in the 70's or 80's. Can't remember which. Anyway, I sharpen with the knife held still and slide the Honesteel across the blade. It works well for me. However, an old hunting buddy keeps his Honesteel in a fixed position and moves the knife across the sides and flats. I can't get an edge that way. Just wondering.

what ever works for you ;) I rarely move the sharpener over the blade. Usually do it when I'm sharpening tools or gardening implements with a metal file or dremal.

I typically use my Edge Pro and/or Sharpmaker but I decided to give Freehanding a shot this evening. Mainly I was reprofiling and wondered if this would speed the process.

I purchased a 220 grit Japanese Waterstone. I was using Cliff Stamp's advice in that angles are not critical, so I had at it. I may have been going at too small of an angle as it was taking forever to reach a burr, so I upped the angle somewhat; still below 15 degrees would be my guess. That sped things considerably.

I'm going to use the Sharpmaker at 30 degrees as I do not have a med/fine grit waterstone and see how I end up.

I did this on a rather inexpensive Scandinavian fish filet knife. I don't have the cojones at this point to try it on a Benchmade or Spydie.
