a dive knife would make a great survival knife? they have a lot of uses, they will never rust, have decent blade length, easy to hold.. the only question is, how long do they hold an edge? Anyone?

The three I've had would hold an edge for 8 to 12 seconds, depending on the temperature of the butter I was cutting, but they made good prybars.

Six dives till it needs sharpening.

I saw a comparison where someone tested Spyderco's H-1 blades against their VG-10 blades. The H-1 performed worse than the VG-10 on a plain edge, but on a serrated edge, the two performed about the same.

Not long. However, pack a sharpener and you'll be good to go.

The alloys used in dive knives are chosen for corrosion resistance, not edge retention.

In a survival situation, having your knife rust to the point where it becomes unusable really isn't an issue. It just does not happen.

I'd rather have a good piece of 1095.
