Does anyone else whittle with old pocket knives?

Since I first discovered my grandpa's dad's old knives, I started collecting older pocket knives. I got my first pocket knife from my grandpa, it was a Swiss Army knife (Tinker or Officer). With this knife I started to whittle. I would go camping and sit at the camp fire carving for hours. Since I have given a little background on my experience, I guess I have to ask something. Does anyone else use "old fashioned" pocket knives to carve, and if so what is you favorite knife? Also if would please tell me, what is good pocket knife under $20 for whittling.

I'd look into Case knives.
Quickly though, I hear their quality is deteriorating.

For around $20 I'd probably go with the one you mentioned - the Tinker. I don't own any, but Rough Rider seems pretty well regarded around here, and that's well within your price range.
I like to use the GEC #62 and #57 - the secondaries come nice and thin.

+1 for the Rough Rider. I've got one of their whittlers and it's a great little knife. The small pen blade and clip blade are ground super thin, they're what I use for detail carving. The only negative is the tacky handle material (i got the faux stag) but other than that it's great. Think I paid $15 shipped.

Good to know they're ground nice and thin, it'll go on the want list. :)
Which model do you have?

Another one I wanted to mention is the Case Small Texas Jack - really great knife!
And the secondary blade - I've heard it called both a modified wharncliff and a modified pen, is a great carving blade.
Another I'd like to try but don't have one yet is the Case pen knife.

Hi there Caleb
Google Rough rider 311. It's a great small whittler with useful blades. The black handled knife in the pic is a RR boxcar whittler, a beast, great for bigger projects or rough work. Every RR I ever bought came razor sharp. You can probably buy both for around $20.00 plus shipping.

Best regards

I do. I used this for a while.

Then I tried this.

Really nice knife, but a bit small for my tastes. So I got this one, my favorite whittling knife.

Very hard to beat the Tinker or Super Tinker esp with the small blade fashioned into a warncliffe.

I have an Oar Carver by Queen and a GEC Geppeto and the SAKs win hands down.

Carry the 57 as an edc though, Super nice knife that I also use when whittling in public.

I like a peanut for whittling (case). The CV takes forever to get dulled down by the wood, and strops down to a super sharp edge. The pen blade is perfect for general tasks, and the clip blade has an awesome tip for getting into tiny places.

I have a case min-copperhead that I whittle with mostly it's great for finer work, the new GEC 33 whittler is really catching my attention though I just may have to grab one of those suckers.

I have actually checked out their knives. I bought a Sod Bust JR. for rough carving.

Hi Caleb,
Just so you know, the clown to whom you were responding was a troll who scrawled as many nonsense posts as possible across BF before the other mods caught him and tossed him out, again. In other words, he was posting nonsense and you should pay him no nevermind.
