I was wondering if the rosewood handles were easily dinged or scratched up, like maybe by the keys in your pocket?

I don't think any knife that is worth more than 20.00 should be given the key and coin treatment in the pocket.Keep the items that will mar finishes in one pocket and keep the other free of debris for your knife.Any knife will eventually get marred or scratched from coins and keys.

I don't much care if the knife gets "pocket dinged." It is a tool - I use it - carry in the coin and key pocket works best for me.

Practical Use - my attitude is use it. I don't much care about holster wear, knife dings, etc. Just tools that I use. Does it cut and does it shoot are my only concern.

I love mine..I did worry about the scratches..but now it is a weak old..and the little twinkle in my eye has gone away..its just another knife to me..just a good tool..just like my Glock..the little scratches mean alot...

I also love my 690-01. I have had mine for over a year and it doesn't show any pocket dings, mine has the bonded ivory scales instead of the rosewood though. The 690 is easily my favorite production knife that I own.

I have no 690 but wanted to comment on what TOMBSTONE had to say and just agree with him 100%. I always keep change, spacepen, and slipjoint folder in my left front pocket. My right front is exclusively for my primary edc. Not much of a problem to get used to either and it sure slows down the marring of the knife.

I know it is a tool and when used it will show marking as any tool will. But I see no reason why it can't be given a little extra care.:) :D

It is tougher than real wood, like cocobolo or something, but not as tough as Micarta, of course. The carbon fiber faux bolster is very ding resistant.

The 690 isn't what I would think of as a work knife though. If I were going to pick a knife to go upside down in my pocket with keys and tools and such, it would probably be a 721 or 550. Save the 690 for wearing your Dockers after work.
