Does anyone have a kuk they don't like?

Is there anyone out there with a big kuk that they just don't feel right about keeping that they wouldn't mind maybe selling to me or something? Anyone with a big heart and an excess of kuks? I've been admiring HI's pieces for almost a year since I've heard of them, but I've been totally unsuccessful in finding one that I can afford. I would like a big one. The heavier the better. :D I keep barely missing the DOTDs that pop up. I've actually had dreams of chopping and clearing brush - and when I wake up I have this empty feeling. I must have one. My price range is around $100 (I'm poor!). The only kuk I've used is a Ka-Bar. It's fun and all but I doubt it's of the same quality I'm expecting from HI. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.

P.S. - a blem would be fine

Sounds like you're looking for a big Ganga Ram Special. It never hurts to email Yangdu and ask if she has something in your price range.
BTW there are forum rules about buying and selling outside of the forums devoted to that. Check the rules.

I second both suggestions.

Sorry, didn't mean to break any rules! I've tried the contacting Yangdu directly thing, but to no avail. Now about that Ganga Ram. Is that the biggest kuk HI makes?

you want big or what? 18" is a lot of kukri. they make 22" GRS blades. that's a LOT of knife. the ang khola is a similar blade, and darned tough. since you're going to USE it, go for a villager, i'd probably lean towards one with a wood handle for that.

18" should be great for brush and small trees. 20" might be more than you want. perhaps a 18-20" for chopping and splitting trees, and a machete, or a lighter faster kukri for brush.

keep your eye on the for sales, ebay, and just plain tell yangdu what you want exactly, and she might help (be specific on your desire; she can't work magic).

good luck

Shao, check ebay often. Contact Yangdu often. Get in touch with Svashtar (sp), Norm, and ask him. He's cleaning house now.

Thanks for all the help, guys. I've looked at ebay, but I'm always afraid of getting a counterfeit or kukri house posing as a real HI kuk. That 22" GRS is sweeeeeeeet. :D 3 1/4 lbs!!! :O I work out pretty religiously so the weight shouldn't be too much of a problem. Instead of field work, I'll probably only use it to chop various things I find in half - so fatigue won't be an issue.

Welcome.

email Yangdu. Explain your preferences and your budget constraints.

You will never, ever, find a more honorable or service-oriented person.

Never, ever.

a thing of beauty in the large blades, imho are the chiruwa handles - that is, full tang with slabs and pins as opposed to the full oval handles with rat tail tangs... one can get the several of the kukris and smaller knives this way.

a second thing of beauty are the dui chirra featue on some blades - that is, double fullers - or a curve along the spine that is forged in. the ang khola has some of that going on towards the tip spine... there is a blade variant, the BDC that features this, and the similar but different foxy folly, and even the bowies to some extent, and who can forget the YCS full-size - oh my ghod - fuller goodness.

blades that combine both of those? ultimate beauty only enhanced by the often exotics woods used. carving is just overkill of this simple guy.

go back and look at the last couple months of specials... several perfect BDCs in big and small, one with neem in the last week or so - bliss to look at (and to own for SOMEONE that stoled it from me ::>) a full size 18-ish inch BDC with chiruwa walnut handles? massive. awesome. sharp.

there are chiruwa AKs to lust for - break it, get two! don't recall a GRS in chiruwa, but it would be awesome. definitely the M43 in that class too.

see these too:

Shao, I agree with all the suggestions. Unless you're built like Paul Bunyon, a 22" GRS is going to be too much knife to swing for more than 3 or 4 good chops. They run about 42 oz. now, so even at 2 lbs. 10 that is a lot of weight and blade to move.

You are much better off with a decent 18" BGRS or nice Villager BGRS. You could score one easily for $100, in fact most go for $85 to $95 (on the deals, not the web.) There are several other models that would work for you just as well, AK's and WWII's, etc.

Just browse the site, pick an 18" model you like, they will run about 28 oz., and email Yangdu and tell her you have about $100 to spend. I'm sure she can find something. I paid $145 for similar knives a couple of years ago, and got a deal then, so $100 is a great deal on one of these.

It may take a few weeks to have one made, but at least you'll have one in the works.

Good luck and don't give up; we'll get you hooked up!

Where are you from, Shao?
Mind telling us your real name? (no offense if it is)
I mean, there's many chinese and Koreans in Texas, but your english seems to good ...
I am from Plano, originally, but I live in Japan now.

You guys have been a great help. I've asked for advice all over bladeforums.com but have never experienced the quantity or quality of response that I have here. I think I may have found a new home here in the cantina. Now all I need is a kuk so I don't feel like a poser. :D I've got my mind and heart set on scoring the perfect piece, so I won't give up until I do.

DannyinJapan: I'm Taiwanese ABC (American Born Chinese). Born and raised in Houston! My Mandarin name is Hsieh Xiao Long. Shao Fu Tzer is the name of a character in a Shaw Bros. flick called Deadly Duo.

Thanks again everyone, I've learned much today, and I'm still watching for suggestions.

Bladite has talked hisself into a wee wittle box methinks.
I'm beginning to wonder when Bladite will start crawfishin, probably when he's asked since when hasn't Miss Yangdu been a Goddess and worked miracles? :p ;) :D

And even though we know Miss Yangdu likes to keep her status about the Goddess thing on the sorta secret side we all know just what Miss Yangdu and her Goddess stature can do in the way of miracles.
The final effort of the kamis in producing the 18" 24 ounce Foxy Folly was nothing less than miraculous and was the direct result of Miss Yangdu saying, "All Right!!!! Looky here boys!!!! If you don't do this khukuri to the specs of our crazy American Customers you're all gonna be hip deep in the bowels of the BirGhorka Charpy, Charky, or however the BirGhorka Outhouse is spelled!!!!"
Of course threatening anyone with such a fate as that is bound to get a few miracles worked. ;) :D

box? what box. follow the logic.

magic is superstition of the unexplainable. miracles are faith of that which shouldn't be explained.

my belief in the goddess of kukri remains unsullied. yay, miracles abound.

besides, mindreading is a silly magic trick, the goddess on the other hand knows our desires, but requires that we ask, plainly, and clearly, offerings in hand.

:P :)

I think all great women have an etherial powerful quality. My wife is a good example. So classy and strong and delicate too. Only the inner goddess inside her makes this juxtaposition possible. Yangdu has it too. Thank you Yangdu. ;) :o
