What size forge do you have? I use a 8"x14" light wall pipe with Kaowool and satanite liner. The burner tube goes in at an angle about 4.5" from the end of the pipe so it would make the fire swirl. I lay it down horizontally and put fire bricks across the front to hold in the heat. I run about 4 lbs of propane and a forced air system. The insides gets white hot and little sparks comes out and then I turn it down a little. The orifice is 1/16" and the tube is 1 1/2". I also covered it up with a blaket of insulation to keep the heat in. It is simple but it works great for small pcs. (less than 1 1/2 lbs.). If you have any questions about any of this, you can e-mail or I will catch it later.

I recently built a forge like Donn Fogg`s 8"x15" pipe 2" kaowool on top and bottom 1"around the inside..1.25"pipe and fittings a surplus wall mount hair dryer 1/16 propane orfice and about 2.5 pounds of propane will heat a 3/4inch bar white hot in about 2 1/2 minutes...oh yes and i just used" stove cement" since i can`t get a hold of satinite!! it works for me...and i love it Thank`s Donn again for the help!!

i keep grinding and grinding and it is still too short!!

I think D.Fogg's design would be good for damascus as the excess flux would drop out the bottom intead of into your refrac.

I have a 8" dia. pipe 11" long with 2" of kaowool and a waterglass coating on the kaowool.

It is built like raker's but with a ron reil type burner, about 4" from the back on a tangent and angled toward the front of the forge. I get forging temp. very quickly, Haven't tried welding in it.

My box fan makes more noise than the forge.
