I was perusing Schrade's web-site and saw this.
wonder if anyone has any experiences with it?

my wife's granddad passed away he was a tough old farmer and the family gave me his rusted Schrade Old Timer. had a serious carbon blade that was pitted but still a beaut after I cleaned it up.

I have gone full circle with knives, started out with a small Old Timer and now I have an oldtimer larger. I am finding that tacticals are not for me anymore. change of style?

schrades and saks I feel so old all of a sudden:eek:

this system didn't allow me to post a photo.

here is a link if you are interested

www.schradeknives.com click on model # 970t-buzzsaw trapper

it is kind of a sak style.

I wish someone would come out with a large folding carbon bladed knife and saw with brass liners that was strong. like a sak trailmaster/rucksack though heavy duty. oh yeah and cheap! I know I am asking for the moon!

I am doggedly searching

I love that knife. I only wish they would make the blades lock, then it would be the PERFECT backwoods pocketknife. I really like the pick and tweezers. It's an excellent "retro" woods blade, and a nice daily carry too!

I also have a Buzzsaw Trapper and I like it alot!
The blade cuts very well because it's thin and slightly concave on the sides, and the saw really works too.

But as a wilderness knife I will still go with the large lock-blade SAKs.
Here's why:
Rust. Although the blades are Schrade+ stainless steel, the backsprings are not and they will rust.

The handle shape can let your hand slide onto the blade rather easily.

The blade does not lock (but the saw does).

It's still a great knife, but if I had to take either the Buzzsaw or the Rucksack into the woods, I would choose the Rucksack.

Good luck,
Allen.

I'm not into the real high dollar stuff, but I have to admit that I cast a glancing eye to the finer blades now and then.

I will say that when I was farming "for real" an Old Timer is all that I would carry. Tradition notwithstanding, it was the only knife (and folding Bucks BTW) available at the time that would hold up to the regimen. I managed to tear up a SAK, a "fancy" Buck, and even an early Spyderco. I could touch it up with a smooth rock or a fine file, spray it down with WD-40 and toss it back into my greasy and dust filled pocket. In my opinion, ya done well.

I believe that it was the first real knife I ever bought for myself, about 23 years ago. I don't remember if it was called old timer but looking at the site it seems that I have the Cave Bear model. I really like the knife. It sits on my workbench and still gets a lot of use. I left it in the leather sheath too long and now the brass is stained.
