Does Anyone Have Impressions On The 15" Silver Mounted Ang Khola?

I was particularly interested if it is being heavily used, and if the silver bolster is holding up as one would expect for an AK... I'm currently working on a khukuri with "non ferrous" mountings, and it would be important to know if silver holds up well. Thanks! :)

I have a 20" and it has held up great. It is my end of the world Khurk. It is my favorite non-chit khurk. ;) :D

Thanks, Mark; good to hear... The AK's are heavy duty choppers, and if the silver bolster holds up, it's definitely strong enough.

If the handle is firmly attached, the bolster should only serve to prevent the handle from splitting. Probably more of an issue with the old timers with wood handles and rat-tail tangs. If you were really concerned about rigidity, you could mount a steel ring under the silver bolster to take any force that might occur. Only you would know it's there. And me, of course

There's no reason you can't have pretty and durable too. I chose silver fittings for the YCS and mine has held up well. Admitedly it hasn't been used much the last couple of years but it did get a workout before then.:D

The silver will be fine on an AK. Only problem with the silver is that it tarnishes so bad.:grumpy:

FWIW, the silver bolster on my YCS has held up perfectly, thanks to the full tang. OTOH, when I suggested a silver bolster on the origininal Berk special, Pala flatly refused to do it because of the partial tang. Pala knows best.

Bri... Excellent way to be positive whatever metal used for the bolster will hold up; thanks for the tip.

Yvsa... Thanks for the input; I'm sure when you used it, you put it through its paces... :) I love the look of silver too, but I don't love the look of silver's tarnish.

Berkley... Thanks! I understand why a chiruwa khukuri would allow for a bolster made of soft metal. Being that Pala declined to clothe the Berk Special with a silver bolster prompts me to consider Bri In Chi's suggestion.

I will also be sure to make the bolster extra thick, and properly heat treat it!

just as I have my big WWII and the three suripatis that have passed through my hands. I rather like the little guy and I've had no problems with the bolster or butt plate. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks, Frank

the models I've had with silver fittings seem to do very well.

as far as the durability is concerned - philthygeezer has one he has used to chop (IIRC).
