Does anyone here have any experience with the KaBar USN Mark 1 Deck Knife? (#2221)

I am considering purchasing this because...

a) The steel is 1095 Chromium Vanadium,

b) it has a full tang, thus enhancing durability,

c) the grind on it is a perfect 20 degrees (this eliminates the need to re-profile).

Comments? Opinions?

Get one. Classic design. Only question, the handle is just over 4" which could be short for my hands.

I love mine! The flat grind terminates into the edge perfectly making it an excellent slicer. It's compact, well built and a pleasure to work with. Can't say enough good things

My Colonial USN Mark1 Deck Knife a is fine knife, and I know that the blade profile is the perfect general purpose type for nearly every outdoor application known to humankind. The feedback provided by the members of this forum have helped me decide which knife I should select to serve me best when "the chips are down" and the reliability of a sheath knife can make the difference between life and death... or at least a damned miserable, lousy night in the oudoors.

Thanks.

this was my experience -- I had one and loved the way it performed in the woods, but the handle was short enough the pommel was uncomfortable if I was doing tasks that required either a very tight grip or a lot of leverage, such as whittling tent stakes. (I have extra wide hands, so this is a problem with a lot of knives that have a defined pommel)
the blade shape, edge geometry, and balance were superb.

Sorry it was too small for your hands. I love the basic blade shape, edge geometry too. I truly belive that the USN Mark 1 Deck Knife profile is one of the best general purpose contours to date. It's as great today, as it was in 1943. A no-nonsense working knife that has a "go anywhere, do anything, get the job done" attitude.

I doesn't get much better than that.

Well, I bit. I won't say where I bought the knife, but at $55.93 I feel that the Kraton handle and the blade contour/compositon will more than redeem itself when called upon.

Thanks to all.

I believe they call it Model #2221. The Kraton handle should be great for a "go-to" sheath knife such as this. I can't wait to get my hands on this knife! I bumped the previous thread about this knife back to the top, but I thought starting a new thread was more appropriate.

The more I looked at the knife, the more I wanted it. It is just like my Colonial, only better (read: stronger and has a better blade alloy.) 1095 Chromium Vanadium steel is my friend! This is the Navy Mark 1 I have truly been wanting/craving.

(It makes me look back fondly on the Navy equipment that performed as intended...masterfully.):cool:

I changed my order and paid less than the other outfit. (Their "free shipping" wasn't free, it was $7.95.)

Liars.

Codycash posted a picture of the knife a bit earlier in the thread. This image is identical the knife I have on order.
