Hey,

Do any of you guys use this Gatco angle guide mount? It's the red and black thing in the picture below.

I did two knives over the weekend and really took my time. The second one was in rough shape and i reprofiled it.When i was done my hand was hurting. In hindsight, guess i should have worn a glove, huh?

Later i was poking around online looking for a remedy and i saw this gizmo. The proper name is the "Gatco Easy Grip Clamp Mount."

Has anyone here ever used one? If so, i'd like your opinion of it.

Thanks

I dont have this one, but the lansky knife sharpening system works well. For beginners who cant sharpen consistently like me, they take out nearly all of the challenge of sharpening. On my lansky sharpening system, I bought their super sapphire stone and I can get a knife to cut circles in newspaper with barely any effort. If you are a beginner, get one of these. I have never used this sharpener, but I know the concept works very well. Another sharpener like this is the wicked edge sharpener. I have heard good things about that one too. You should do some research and find out which one suits your budget/needs your best.

My complaint with the Gatco and Lansky is the pre-set angles, this only give you a range of angles which will vary based on the width of the blade. I much prefer something like the KME which gives you an infinite adjust so you can set the angle you actually want on a particular blade.

Thanks for the advice, Cap. But i already own this one. It works well enough for me so i'm not looking to buy a new system. If i were looking for something new i'd check out the Wicked Edge. :)

I was just wondering about the aforementioned accesory, the guide holder.

I was asking about the angle guide holder accessory, right?

Anyway, yes, it's true, the Gatco doesn't offer the ability to set it at infinite number of angles.

But it does offer 30, 25, 22, 19, 15 and 11 degree angles. I've always found that spread more than adequate.

Now, about that angle guide holder ... .

I have a GATCO, but haven't used it in a long time. I bought the holder you showed. I think it's somewhat helpful. My complaint was that it let the system move around (sloppy fit). It was better than nothing. I'd suggest a clamp that can hold the metal over this. If you don't want the bother, go ahead and buy the handle- it's not bad.

That's true but it is not a true angle, it will vary based on the width of the blade so each hole isn't really a fixed angle, it is a range of angles depending on the width of the blade you are sharpening.

Yessir, my sharpener doesn't create true angles. It creates what they call in France "faux angles." Have you ever been to France? Them Frenchys cook up some mighty fine vittles. And those French babes, all i can say is ooo la la! Are you from Florida? That might explain sumpin right there. Do you live near a beach? How's the fishing?

Dang, lookee there. I done hijacked my already hijacked thread. Lemme see if i can get it back on course.

I have.

Like you, I did not find the clamp comfortable to hold (too sharp and too big/heavy) so I bought the mount but I did not like it either. It is too large to use it handheld and I did not want to mount it permanently to a larger base.

Besides this, there were a couple of other reasons why I did not like the Gatco clamp and stones so I sold it again.

For me, it isn't the weight of the clamp but rather the sharp edges on it that bother me. And, like you, I don't want to mount it permanenty anywhere either.

I was thinking it might might work okay by wrapping your hands around the column using the finger grips and, at the same time, pressing it downward against a table or bench.

I would think this would have to provide a lot more stability than just holding the clamp alone.

Did you try that?

I have it and don't like it. Prefer to use a small vise to hold the angle guide rigidly.

BTW, good job returning to the OP. [emoji2]
