Does anyone hog hunt with hounds and their RAT? I know some people use knives to hog hunt with. If you do, tell us about it.

Well Teague, I live in Maine and I have a Izula (BlK) on my side. GREAT DEER hunting here!! Hogs Hmmmmm Like to try good to eat?

I take my RC-4 with me when I go hog hunting, but I don't use hounds. A) I don't have any and B) Some of the pigs I go after are just too big. They require my old trusty 1894 44mag. The one I'm after right now is somewhere around 700-800lb.

Tag. All I ever hear is how I should never wish we had (more) feral hogs in MO, but I wouldn't mind whacking a few of them.

Hunting a hog with a knife ? No thanks...ones I seen would take you down no matter what Knife you had in hand... Never bring a knife to a gun fight I think that was a hog hunting reference

I haven't gone in quite awhile, but I did show my RC6 to two of my buddies who hog hunt on a regular basis. They started drooling at the sight of the big blade and now both guys use an RC6 for their hunts. They normally take hogs in the 150 to 350lb range. They really like the sheaths also, easy to clean.

Never hunted hog. I know guys who do, including one who uses a spear, but no way in hell am I gonna do it. I'm a coward, and unashamed of it.

i personaly never did it but i went with my dad once but he used what looked more or less like a short sword its blade was close to 14 inches

Nothing to be ashamed of there. Most of the guys I hog hunt with just hunt from a stand or a blind. They think I'm nuts because I prefer to ground hunt them. I like to be able to move and stalk more than one area. The stand is too boring for me and if you stay in there and things just don't play out, you won't see anything all night. Meanwhile, the pigs were out all over the place, just not near you. Now the downside is, that it's not uncommon to get charged if you don't put them down before they notice you. That's when it gets dangerous. If the pigs are only 100-200lb. it just kinda shakes you up a little, but when they're 500-700lb. of schoolbus coming at you, you sh#t your pants hard enough to propel you up the tree.

My friend Kurosawa wanted to go with me on a trip earlier this year. Brought some kind of big ass spear with him. He told me about the pigs that he and his cousins would hunt in Hawaii. He sounded real confident, talking about how he and his cousins would take spears and big knives and stab and tackle the pigs. I thought, "hmmmmm, I wonder if the pigs are smaller in Hawaii." I took him to a food plot the first night that ran down a section of powerlines. We stalked in and I told him to get in the stand in the middle of the food plot and watch through binocs before he tried to spear one just to make sure he really wanted to try it. Then, I stalked up the plot along the tree line. Not too far away, probably only about 30-40 yards from the stand he was in, I spotted a pretty good size pig. I was close enough and went ahead and let the air out of him. Then I walked back and got Kurosawa. As we were walking to the pig I said, " you still want to try a spear?" H said, "sure, that one didn't look too big." When we got to the pig, his face was telling a different story. He said, "whoa man! That thing looked a lot smaller through the glasses from a distance! This thing is f@#$in huge!" I said, "This one is a middleweight around here. They get a lot bigger." He said, "I'll see you at work Monday." lol

I found a spot in the woods near my dad's house where they had been rooting around in the dirt and there was a hoof print that my hand, with fingers spread, fit inside of with room to spare. I ain't messin with somethin like that.

will those bigger hogs charge you very often? If you're just standing around/walking towards them? That's kinda scary...

I don't think a Rat Cutlery blade would be good for hug hunting, unless you mean skinning and the like. If that is the case, than it would likely be great to do the job :)

I know I won't be hug hunting with my RAT. :) All kidding aside, thanks for the interesting comments guys. Years ago, I was a hound hunter for bears and cougars mostly. I always carried a .22 mag to make the kill shot with when the hounds had the critter treed. I never tried a knife though. I just didn't have that much courage.

They can't see very well so if you can stalk up on them in the dark and be quite, usually you'll get the advantage and have plenty of time to shoot them. If they smell you or hear you though and you're close enough for them to bead in on, you better start your ass running and get up a tree.

I've known guys who say that you can dodge them because of how bad their eye sight is and as long as you can confuse them, they'll keep barreling along in the same direction, but I'm not taking that chance. Plus, those guys were dealing with smaller hogs, 100-250lb. I'm not going to HOPE I can out manuver a giant pissed off territorial animal.

Hogs are nasty aggressive where I go. When you see a big rogue boar trotting around, you should assume it's because he's too mean to have any friends.

They are dangerous animals, especially the boars. They'll kill a dog . Tarzan, I'm not. Boars are nasty and for eating younger sows are the way to go.

I'll be taking a hog with my RC-6 once deer season ends.

Armored pitbulls for the hold, it's going to be wild.

I'll have a shotgun loaded with slugs with me for protection if things get out of hand.

Pigs are evil animals. I worked alot on pig farms as a kid and have killed a few with a blade.
