I am posting a picture for a new member, jga611.
Welcome to the forum John. John had some questions on this knife.
The knifes Tang reads Schrade USA 171 UH the guard contains the Uncle Henry Signature as well as a serial # 41220.

I don't have a 171UH, and don't know a lot about them. Are there any members out there who can tell John something about his knife?

Thanks,
Dale

I know I have bneen wanting one for an all out project I have planned, but other than that, not much. The elk antler handle looks to be an aftermarket mod IMHO

P.S welcome John

I wasn't ignoring the question, just doing some research. The blade itself was made in 1975. I cannot find an instance of Schrade using elk horn on a 171UH, either for production or special factory order.

Without a word given as to the knife's known history, the picture doesn't show me enough details to go any further except to give guesses. It is possible that an old blade was used on a newer sample. It was pretty common for a big customer to request a fancy SFO based on "a knife not in your current line", and the fixed blades presented a large canvas for decorative works both on handles and blades. The knife may have been a "mockup" for a photo pasteup sample. Schrade did not always go to the expense of presenting a customer with expensive one-off samples, especially when involving special tangstamps, complicated scrims or gold filled blade etches. Base knife photos or photocopies actually had those details pasted on and noted by their graphic artist.

Or the knife could be the work of a aftermarket knifemaker. It is obvious that a lot of work was invested and if that is the case, it is odd that it has only the fitted elk antler handle for a customizing feature.

Michael,I know it's post 731/2 from the Schrade+ marking but how did you pin down the 1975 date on the knife.Arnold

A lot of time put into research, compiling the numbers I see, and... some fancy footwork with the production records for the 171UH.

Thanks Codger,That leaves about 100,000 to date.I hope the chemo keeps working.I think it may take awhile.Arnold

Indeed, it will take a while. But here are some more interesting factoids on the 171UH production for you.

Approximate number of 171UH made with the birdshead pommel 1970-71: 6,913
Approximate total first production 1970-83 - 122,391
Approximate total second production 1989-94 - 13,424

So the rarest based solely on production quantities, not attrition, is the birdshead pommel from 1970-71.

Next most uncommon is the second production knives 1989-94.

Most common is the first production square pommel cap 1972-1983.

Minutia, I know, but I find it interesting!;)
