does anyone know of a small affordable knife with a talon style blade?

I am looking for something similar to a shivworks disciple. Or something that I can mod that is cheap. It is a knife designed to be held in a pikal or ice pick grip, reverse with the edge in. Most knives do not work well as such. Symmetrical daggers arent toobob's bad ergonomically but I want only one edge. Guess I could always dull one edge of some boot knife but would rather have that shape of the disciple.

I do have the spyderco k pal cause it is the only folder that is even close but don't want to spend so much $$ on some fixed blades.

There's also the Cold Steel Double Agent II, which fits that description and is quite cheap. Then you have a variety of Spyderco's like the Civilian, Harpy, Tasman Salt, Superhawk, etc.

What's your price range? You may well want to get one of the custom makers on the forum to execute your design and that way you'll have just what you want with no need to mod. Ban Tang makes some specialty pikal grip knives.

save up and get a ban-tang or shiv works. It always bothers me when people post trying to find a knife "like" another knife. save up and just get what you really want. if you cant afford it now than just wait. the joy of owning what you really want should really be factored into this kind of thing.

but if you really want to mod then maybe you should try it with one of these? http://www2.knifecenter.com/item/MEYMJWHARNING/meyerco-dirk-pinkerton-wharning-neck-knife

i have always thought they could be easily turned into a pkal style knife.

Take a look at Al Mar's Falcon or Eagle Ultralights with Talon blades. I'm pretty happy with my Eagle:thumbup:

uh the only al mar knife that remotley fits his description is the al mar back up 2 talon. unless im really mistaking what he wants here. i dont see how the eagle is anything like a shivworks

You can pick up a Byrd Meadowlark Hawkbill in FRN for around $20 bucks.

Well, the Disciple is a fixed blade, and you say you already have a Spyderco P'kal, so I'm going to assume that you're not interested in folders.

There's precious few hawkbill/talon fixed blades out there. There's the Al Mar Backup 2, as razordescent mentioned. But it's obviously designed to be held edge-down and looks like it'd be unwieldy edge-up. There's karambits of course, but these are definitely not meant for a pikal grip. But you could find one that looks like it could be comfortable if you took a hacksaw to the finger hole, and then take a hacksaw to the finger hole.

Your best bet could be the Cold Steel Spike Talon. It's rather minimalist in the handle, but doesn't look like it'd be too uncomfortable to hold backwards. The finger guard contour could act as a thumb ramp. You can always wrap it in paracord to give it a broader grip.

thanks guys. Most folders or fixed with a claw style blade either have a blade that is too curvy or that is relative to the handle to make for a karabmit type knife, or the tip makes a little hawk bill like sweep down etc. THe edge needs to be staright or only slightly concave.

I like that Kershaw folder. It looks like i might could be modd'd to take a "wave" type notch by the thumb studs to make it open on one's pocket edge. The sypderco Kpals and trainers are just so expensive.

If nothing else, I could always trunkiate a Boar Hunter in a major way and cut of that stupid subhilt to hold it edge in.

Couldnt say anything about the hawkbill but I have tried several Byrd knives most notably Cara Cara 2 FRN, Cara Cara 2 G10, Meadow Lark, and Robin I believe and each one was really great for a value knife. the 8cr is a decent blade steel and the ergonomics are on par with knives double their price.
