Does anyone know? What steel is in Council Tool Axes?

I've been looking for a proper axe and I've been eyeing council tool. I would kind of like to know what steel they use before I pull the trigger. I'm leaning towards the hudson bay pattern 28", so if anyone has any feedback on those I would welcome it. Thanks!

The Velvicut line of Hudson Bay axes are 5160 steel... the stock Hudson Bay I think is 1060....maybe someone else can confirm...

I've seen a few YT Videos of guys who really like Council's Hudson Bay axes..

Peace, Rooster

I don't know the steels used, but based on the two mauls I have from Council, I'd say they know their business just fine and they'll make a good axe too. The mauls have a nice ring to them and are the right hardness - you see slight marks from sledging but it'll take years to deform the back at the rate my aging joints can split wood. I'd buy their "low end" axes in a heartbeat if I needed one. Might do it even though I don't need one.

Velvicut? well, maybe. Can't see paying $100 plus for an axe, but that's just me - no disrespect to those who want the top of the line. I don't doubt it's a fine product, just not the smashing bargain that those mauls were!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I don't have the cash to drop on the velvicut (I would if I could), but those baseline models look and sound like a good deal. Think I'll be going for it today.

The long handled HB is a really nice axe for light use and camping/bushcrafting type use. I got my son one for Christmas a year ago and he's used it a lot for limbing and even tried some carving with it. The only issue we had was that after some use, the metal wedge started slipping out due to mostly an overly wide kerf. I lowered the head 1/8" or so and replaced the metal wedge with a closely fitted poplar wedge, which I glued in place. The head hasn't moved yet and has been used quite a bit. It was sharpened by a vendor (free upgrade) and has held edge well. Last time I checked it would still shave arm hair. The handle is more like 26" on the HB, by the way. The same handle on the boys axe is 27.5 approximately.

Incidentally, I liked the HB so well, I bought a boys axe to play with. It was a fine axe as well, but I didn't really need it long term, so I put an inexpensive sheath on it and gave it to my son's best friend, after checking with his dad, who tells me that the boy uses it pretty much every day and keeps it in his room.
