Does anyone know where to find Nicholson marking files like Dwayne Dushane uses?

Hi, Can anyone tell me where to buy 01 and 02 6 1/4 marking files like Dwayne Dushane uses in his video? I tried the MSC part numbers he supplied with no luck. Are these files discontinued. I think they are listed as swiss pattern files. They are half round with no files cuts on the bottom. He sharpens the edges and makes a file that cuts really detailed thorns in the vine pattern. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Larry Lehman, Bakersfield, CA

I don't have the video you mentioned. Could you provide the outdated MSC part numbers, since that is the only potentially definitive method of identification you indicated other than the video?

Hi, The 01 file is #60304318 and the 02 file is #60304326. These are called marking files and are 6 1/4 inches long made by Nicholson . Thanks for any help. Larry

I searched under "Marking file"

When choosing between files, it is important to consider the file's pattern and what type of filing work needs to be done. Hand files, also known as American-pattern, machinists' and engineer's files, are used to remove material quickly. Precision hand files, also known as Swiss-pattern files, are especially useful for finishing delicate and intricate parts. Precision needle files have narrow tips for finishing surfaces that would be difficult to reach with a larger file.

The small tips of these files allow you to get into tight spots. Buy them individually or in sets. All shapes taper to the point, except rectangular, joint, and slitting. Files have 1/8" dia. round knurled handles.

Thank you for the info! I had just found out that MSC had discontinued The Nicholson #0 (course) Marking file #60304318 but has a substitute round file that links to that number. The only difference is that the round file has teeth on the flat side that must be ground off which is no big deal if you have a good belt grinder. Also they have Nicholson file substitutes for the #2 and # 4 files. I bought the #2 and #4 at $18 each plus shipping so it came to about $50.00. I am going to buy all three of the files that McMasters carries at the better price of $12 each since I plan to do a lot more fileworking on my knives. It is so worth the time for the great look you get on the knives. Thanks for your advice. LarryLehman, Bakersfield

Just a quick correction: I just stated that MSC has substitutes for the discontinued marking files that are round files. I meant to write that these substitutes are HALF ROUND files. You have to sand off the flat side to get a clean edge that is sharp. If you watch the Dwayne Dushane file work video he explains that he sharpens the edge of the file to get a fine detailed cut. These substitutes can be modified the same way. His file work is beautiful especially the vine pattern because of these files. I hope this helps some others. Larry Lehman, Lehman Custom knives
