The metal thumb disk or stud you can screw down onto a blade that doesn't have a thumb stud to make it easy to open with one hand. They used to be called one-armed bandit. Does anyone know of a current manufacturer or source?

If you're tapping a hole in the spine of your blade to screw in the damned thing, I'm sure you could pick a washer, countersink it and add a corresponding screw...?

Or are these things mountable without modifying the blade itself?

No drilling and tapping - it used a set screw to hold the piece in place.

I can't comment on the quality, as I've never used them; but the almighty Google showed a product called Kwik Thumb Stud that is available at BHQ (and a number of other places that do not support this site). It's out of stock on the river site, but searching it there brings up other similar options.

The Kwik Studs work fine. Here's one I had on a Queen Mountain Man:

That particular knife had a rather stiff action so it was a little painful on the thumb, but you could indeed open it one handed.

I use the Kwik Thumb too, on an Extrema Ratio Resolza, and it works great. I read that if the locking spring is too stiff it can overcome the friction applied by the set screw. But it is cheap to try, and I found it to be worthwhile.
