does anyone not sharpen their own knives

I'd like this to stay in general if possible, I doubt there'd be any yes answers in maintenance.

Wondering who has someone else do it-friend/family, professional sharpener, factory returns; or if anyone has a knife they just have never had resharpened. I have seen at least one post that said as much, and after what I consider protracted periods of time for an edc, like more than a year... wish I remembered where.

Most of the people I know don't sharpen their own knives...probably because they know I'll do it. I sharpen my dad's knives, he's always carried a stockman or sak, and they don't get to dull for him for 2 or 3 months. While I sharpen mine atleast once a week.

I used to sharpen my friend's knife, but he kept bringing it back to me with chips in it. He was always hitting staples in the cardboard. I go tired of sharpening them out with my ceramic stones.

Folk take their kitchen knives to a local locksmith that has a regular grinding wheel.

My friends don't loose their temper, but their knives do....

I have to agree with the other posts. Every one I know brings their knives, axes, pretty much every sharp tool to me. I guess that's what you get for knowing how to sharpen well.

My dad used to sharpen my knives for me especially the harder ones(recurve and other odd shaped ones) before he died. I then started to get a lot better at putting a standard bevel on a knife that is nice, even and wickedly sharp. I still have problems with the different shaped blades and do alot of swearing while I am at it.

I love sharpening knives. A nice way to relieve stress. I feel that if you can sharpen your knife correctly then you won't need serrations on your knife. I need to find a cheap knife and start trying to do a convex edge so I can learn that style of sharpening.

I have all my knives sharpened at a local knife store (river's edge cutlery). Takes em about a minute to have a shaving sharp edge. -I've never had much luck sharpening knives myself. I haven't tried in a long time though. I'm sure there is some satisfaction in doing it yourself that I'm missing out on, but the ease of have it done for you is nice too.

I'm sorry, having someone else sharpen your knives for you is like having someone tie your shoes for you....if you are going to use a tool learn how to take care of it.

See, at least this takes the quality/control factor out of it. I think everyone has seen the locksmith, keygrinder, what-have you with a bench grinder who wants to make some extra cash. At the knife store, at least, you don't have to worry about deep gouges and ruined tempers!

O.K. I'll be the village idiot....

Somatimes my fiancée sharpens the knives of the household. The reasons are:

1. She's a goldsmith and I'm a freelance writer/translator. What do you think, who will make a better job on a delicate piece of metal?

2. Though I can make a fairly decent edge on a proper stone, I won't work on a knife more than 10 minutes. I'm lazy. She is more patient.

3. I can't cook. I don't have the slightest intension to learn to cook. Not even an omlette. My part is to eat. She is a very talented chef. So, she needs a sharp knife in the kitchen. I don't.

So, I only sharpen my personal EDC (wouldn't have it any other way). The rest of the knives are her responsabilty. Anyway, she's a real knifenut, who's also a registered member here. The knives are in good hands. :D

You lucky, lucky man! I want a knife-knut girlfriend!

I find you just have to get in the mood. I sharpen other peoples knives and usually they have to wait unless I have some real incentive. Now if the edge isn't that bad then its not a big deal but when I wait for the moods I'll sit down and just sharpen a bunch of knives and next thing I know an hr or two has passed.... Its usually in those times when I sharpen best.

I always sharpen my own knives. The one time I sharpened somebody else's they told me they were too sharp.

I don't sharpen other people's knives now!
