Ok, this may be a bad idea in general, but do any of you re-cut or re-shape any of the older axes or hatchets in your collections? I have two that I have re-shaped (and I don't mean re-bevel or re-grind). I will post pics as soon as I can.
The first one was a 'Craftsman' boy scout hatchet and the second one was a 2 or 2 1/2 pound no-name single bit. They both got the 'hawk style diet plan and now they are both my new favorite toys.

Yes I have made a few for cutting, brushing, and limbing Russian Olive trees.just have to be really carful not to over heat the head and draw out the temper I cut all of mine with a hand saw and all of them have been no name heads

If what you have and what you want are two different things and you have the ability to repurpose something into what you want then I think it is a good idea. Let's see some pictures.

I have done a few no names, cut a flare off the top to make it a bit better balanced and improve the look, made a chinese db a little smaller and more symmetrical, put a beard on and cut the poll off of an estwing camp axe, probably more over the years. Done a few cold steel hawks too, it's pretty fun to do more than strip the head and wrap paracord around the handle, which is about 80% of the trail hawk mods you see. I tried some file work but half arsed it and it turned out pretty bad, have some ideas for the next one though.

Yes, I re-worked a bunch of cheap harbor freight hatchets. Pretty complete mod- re-drifted for a hawk handle/ reshape/ heat treat and parkerize. More that a simple cut and grind but not too difficult.

 Wow, AV, those are super nice. Man, you jerks (just kidding) are gonna make me really step up my game. All I did was turn a basic (to my part of the world) single bit tatchet mildly custom and a totally wrecked un-named (un-usable) single bit into a poorman's Norlund (or Hudson Bay pattern). My personal favorite pattern. They are both still in progress and pics are coming.

Visitor, when I read this thread about two days ago, I automatically thought of your hawks. Glad you posted them.

I've cut / ground an axe down or too, just the same as you (post above). A Hudson bay style and a modified hatchet. Both are still works in progress, but useable as is. I just need to clean up the grind lines and sit down with a file.

They go well with your Mora
Best ten dollar knife on the planet.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I get motivation from the excellant pieces/ ideas and makers in this forum.

very nice love the head shape
