Does anyone sharpen their convex knives on the DMT dia Sharp stones?

I recently bought a Bark River Arurora in the CPM3V steel. I've heard a lot of good things about this steel so I thought I would try it out for myself. I've been having a hard time getting an edge on it that I like. Currently I use 1,500 grit sandpaper on a mouse pad and a double sided leather strop from KSF with the Bark River black and green compounds. I feel like I'm pretty decent at sharpening convex knives, however I'm used to knives with softer steel. What I would like to know is if anyone has ever tried using the DMT dia sharp stones with convex knives and if they would recommend that. Or just try using coarser grits of sandpaper first.

Thanks,

it work fine, just as with any other hard stone, you'll be able to really control the shape of the curvature rather than count on the deflection of you backing material to create the curve.

The downside is that cosmetically it is extremely challenging, a real test of your ability to consistently work angles and rake paths across the plate. Most of this can be "fixed" by finishing with a hard backed strop of some sort - if you've done everything else right it cleans up with only a few passes. A sheet of diamond lapping film - 15u or 6u can do a great job as well to not only clean up the cosmetics but also refine the edge down.

A few drops of oil on the plate as you work can also help with the cosmetics.

Waterstones and convex play very well together, but the diamond can do a great job if you understand the limitations.

Waterstones will eat 3V without a problem. I would recommend some Shapton stones.

Thanks for the help guys I really appreciate it. I said diamond stones because that's what I have, but I will definitely take a look at getting some waterstones and trying those out. Thanks for the help again.
