I was looking at my XM 3 inch yesterday, and saw the drop point spanto blade shape. Made me wonder.. does anyone use these knives to work on animals? I have no doubt you could field dress a deer.. but does anyone actually use them for that purpose?

If i ever get a lefthanded XM-18 or XM-24 you can bet i'll take mine deer hunting. I always carry a big knife or folder of some type.
But i'm sure any of Ricks knives will get the job done if needed. ;)

I hope to use mine this upcoming hunting season, thats why I would like to get another one with an orange scale. I am sure it would make a great all around hunting knife. You can surely field dress a deer with it and with the nice belly in the blade, it could double as a skinner as well. Hopefully I will bag one this year and I can try it out. If I dont find another one before hunting season, I will use the one I got.

The last couple of years, I have tried several different knives when field dressing and skinnign deer. I used knives I made early on, then I went to a Buck Special, then a Vintage Buck Kalinga. The last couple years I have used a CRK Sable IV and last year I used the CRK Skinner. We field dressed 3 deer and skinned 3 deer with it before it got dull. The design and steel is amazing and I would HIGHLY Recommend the CRK Skinner to anyone wanting a great all around fixed blade knife for hunting.

Now, I am so looking forward to using the XM-18 and see how it performs !!!!

i would use the XM, for heavy chores, but i would be reluctant to use it with blood, goor, or sticky stuff that might just leave a bad smell. If i was lucky enough to score something really awesome.. something all TI frame... hehe.. maybe i would use it to dress a dear..

Where I hunt, there are several small creeks right there, so I rince the knife immediately after field dressing, even a fixed blade, so its pretty clean before it goes in the sheath. When we get back to the cabin, we wash them in boiling water. When gutting a deer, if your doing it right, the blade is about the only thing that gets blood on it and not a ton of it if that. I once saw a guy gut a deer with a razor blade. I was surprised when he did it, but it was slicker than heck and there was not really any blood on it either.
