Does anyone use coal or charcoal to heat treat there blade?

Just like to know because I'd like to know how you go about the temp and what type of metal you use to do this with. I have a forge and its a coal/charcoal forge and I'd like to know if I could use it to heat treat! thank for the help.
 
Use a simple high carbon steel, such as 1095, 1080, 1075, or 5160, etc. heat to non-magnetic, then quench in transmission or olive oil. Temper at 375.

I use a homemade tuyure (steel pipe with holes) with a harborfreight blower blowing through it. Wood charcoal on top. Works fine for me. :D
 
I would go to Tai Goo's website and check his posts on knifenetwork.com for a lot of good info on using wood/charcoal for heat treating and forging.

Beyond that, I would say that for certain of the steels mentioned above, you might look to temper at 400 to 425, depending of course on how successful you are at hardening and on intended use.

I have good luck with 1095. I quench in hot brine. temper at 400. I buy mine from Jantz.
 
I'm going to have to make myself another coal/charcoal forge now that I know that it can be done. I have a lot of wood at my home and no fireplace to burn it in so its going to go to make some knives.
