Does anyone use the Razor Edge Systems?

I searched this forum and came up blank. Maybe that's my answer.

I saw a demo at the 2000 SHOT show and always wondered about it. It seems that John Juranitch knows what he is talking about and the knives at the demo were really razor sharp, but there was one thing that caught my attention. The surface of the clamp rides on the stone and is cut away as it is used. After a while, I would thing that the angle of the bevel would change. I asked the lady who was demonstrating at the time and she said that it wasn't a problem.

Does anyone here use one? What do you think?

I used their clamps for about a year (with both Ark Natural and Diamond hones). Yes, the clamps do slide across the stone surface, but you should not be applying pressure to the clamp - you should be applying pressure to the blade. The clamp is just a guide and should slide over the stone with minimal pressure (if you're doing it correctly). Wear is so minimal that it's not even worth the time spent typing this reply.

By the way, even though the clamps work fine, I abandonded them in preference to an Edge Pro and a SharpMaker.

Thanks. I seems that not many people here use it. I guess for about the same price I could get something like the Edge Pro and have more flexibility.

My understanding is that the Razor Edge clamp will help a person learn to freehand sharpen, which I think is the ultimate in terms of sharpening flexibility. I think this is a good skill to know in case a sharpening device isn't available or one must minimize weight and bulk, such as on a backpacking trip. Also, freehand sharpening doesn't involve extra expense, specialized equipment, set-up time, tool maintenance, complexity, etc., and there is the satisfaction of learning a useful skill without the need to rely on a device.
