Does anyone use XL Cold Steel folders for camping, etc instead of fixed blades

Ive used my American Lawman to baton through saplings fand it did fine. Im sure the larger models would do even better.

Got a XL Clip Point Voyager I use for outdoors related task from time to time. I use it cause it's on my person, instead of in my pack, but not as a replacement for a good fixed blade.

That said, I've done light batoning with it, light chopping, etc. and never had an issue. The thin grid slices like crazy and carves up feather sticks real nice.

I'm more worried about the blade breaking then the lock failing.

If you are going to use a folder for camping, get a Rajah 2. It is the strongest folder I have ever used. It has a thick flat spine, ideal for batoning. A heavy Kukri style blade for chopping. It is my EDC and I hard use it at work daily.

I've chopped with my Rajah II some, nothing huge. Finish off a broken sapling, clearing branches. I have big FB's for that kinda stuff anyway so I'm not going to take a chance breaking a fairly expensive folder. I'll still put it to work, just not very hard.

I've used my Voyager Tanto XL for a little chopping and clearing, but no baton work or anything too heavy. It's gone through 2" branches or saplings with very little trouble.

You never really want to substitute a folder for a fixed blade in a situation that calls for the strength of a fixed blade, however.
