Does D2 requires oiling?

I have always oil my 1095 carbon steel blades, but for SS (440C,S30V,etc.) have never used oil just keep them dry.

Does the Semi SS D2 requires a constant coat of oil to prevent rust, or will just keeping it dry suffice?

Thanks

D2 is as close to being stainless as you can get without being stainless, imho. I treat them like stainless knives, and over long periods they develop a nice gentle patina that I actually like.

I oil the CPM-D2 composite blades from Kershaw to darken them some and seal the pores of the finish because excessive sweat (gross huh?) will tarnish the blades if they go uncleaned then stored. If you maintain them well and keep them dry and clean when not in use, you shouldn't have any issues worth worry.

In general though, D2 should weather corrosion much better than the 1095 you're accustomed to using.

my D2 spyderco paramilitary is fine as long as I keep it dry. I haven't had any issues with humidity causing rust either, but others have reported differently.

I oil pretty much all of my blades, It can't hurt, unless you're cooking with them, then you might want to rinse them with water to eliminate the bitter taste.

I've cleaned deer with Doziers, washed them off, dried them, and put them away without oiling. Haven't had a problem.

I oil all of my knives, even stainless once. D2 doesn't really require any other special attention.

I've posted this before but I have accidentally soaked both Dozier and May D2 in the Gulf of Mexico for several hours at a time and then gone about 2 hours with the knives in the soaked leather sheath (May) before noticing. The worst I've gotten from my now repeated brainfarts was a few small spots so inconsequential that they were easily removed with a pencil eraser.

I guess I should add that I have just had trouble with my CPM-D2 wanting to rust. My Benchmade Grip (D2 and coated) has taken trips into the freshwater for hours and only had a few small spots show up, but my D2 Para would rust if you looked at it the wrong way.

I had one D-2 blade pocket knife that for some unknown reason just lived to rust. It needed no help at all, just pocket carry was good enough. I call it Ol Rusty. All of my other D-2 blades have not rusted at all even when wet upon occasion, ... go figure??

Thanks guys!

I am considering getting a BM 32 Morpho for EDC (legal in my area). I am glad most don't have problems with rust on D2, I personally don't like to oil EDC pocket knives, as I may have to use them for food prep.

I oil any knife that is going into storage. As far as my EDC knife goes, I may wipe it down with a little oil about once a month.

I remember seeing that thread. still want to do that with mine.... maybe this weekend!

I love the darker look of the patina, I wish the same could be done to the pocket clip.

has it solved your rust issues??

Its solved it 100%. I haven't put a drop of oil on it since and its been perfect. It stays in my EDC rotation and gets carried at least 3-5 times a week. I wipe the blade off if I get something on it, but I have not done any preventive care since the patina. I wouldnt hesitate to do it if something like this came up on another knife of mine.
