Does G10 lose its grippiness?

So I had a recon 1 for a couple of months and then sprung for another recon 1 in tanto just for kicks.

I had EDC'd the clip point that I had for at least a month at this point, and I noticed a very substantial difference between the aggressive texturing between the two. Is this just breaking in? or should I expect G10's texturing to steadily deteriorate over time?

Also, is there any way to make g10 more grippy?

You can sand G10 to return the grip.

Ive never heard of it losing grip over time, but I guess its possible.

Slightly, yes. It's like the breaking in on DMT stones-it wears in at first, then stops.

really?

i sand g10 to make it LESS grippy

unless you are using some super coarse sandpaper I guess

Micarta will become less grippy (as the pores fill with sweat and dirt) and can be sanded or cleaned with acetone (or similar).

G10 generally will NOT wear down (except over a considerable length of time - years of constant hard use). It is much tougher than Micarta in the "wearing down" aspect. What will happen though, is that its pores (or maybe texture - not the pores really) too will fill with grime and dirt and need to be cleaned with a cleaner (like simple green) and a toothbrush.

I wouldn;t sand G10 to add grip either, only to reduce "gripiness".

i have noticed the G10 on my spyderco paramilitary isnt as grippy as the first day i got it, but i have carried it everyday for nearly a year so im not surprised it has worn a tad.

The very sharp ridges that produce the initial high grab on the scales will break down over the first week or so.

After that it should not wear excessively. I would not sand it, as that will reduce the grip. Texturing G-10 for grip is a rather interesting process. IIRC when making the stuff you actually have to push a mold into the G-10 top layer to produce it. After it is formed you can't really re-create the texture.

I have sanded the G-10 on my Recon 1 to make it less grippy as well. Its a pants shredder out of the box, especially with that strong clip. I think its plausible if not likely that G-10 will get less grippy over time, as it wears.

You can see where I have sanded the bottom two. I don't doubt that usage and pocket wear would do more or less the same thing, over time.

Maybe I misunderstood.

If I had slipping problems with G10, I would sand with 80 grit or so. You can feel the grip real good at 80 grit.

Didnt occur to me that the knife would already be textured.

Sanding with a lower grit then the current finish should add grip, higher grits reduce it.
