Does good steel ring?

My ex father in law taught me that good steel will ring when thumped. I have never been able to find a hunting knife that rings but would like to know is that the sound of quality? And if it is what steel is best. I had a chipper blade I made into a knife that had a great ring to it. But I have no idea what steel it was. Most of the stuff I check now has a very dull sound to it. Is that all the chromium? Or just the quality?

If you suspend a heat treated blade that does't have the handle on yet with a piece of wire and tap it with a small piece of metal it will ring. The handle materials kill (dampen) the ability of the steel to make the ringing tone.

That would make sense. The chipper blade knife I had was about 16" in length, therefore giving it more room to ring. But does better steels have a better ring?

well from a purely musical stand point, i would assume the steel would be a more consistant structure but just a guess
