Operation Enduring Freedom khukris with "Americanized" handle.

I want a khukris, but I really don't like the Hindu/Nepalanese (sp) type handle. I looked through Page 1 and Page 2 pics at the HI site and saw nothing like it.

If HI doesn't make a khukris like this, does someone else make one, with similar to HI quality?

I hope this isn't the wrong place or the wrong question to ask. It's clear that KHHI isn't welcome while HI is here.

Thanks,

Al

This is the HI manufacturers forum.
Would you ask for Benchmade recommendations on a Spyderco forum? :)

HI Does make a Khukri with a more western style handle but I don't remember which model it is. I'm sure someone will be around in a bit to let you know which model it is. BTW It's a newer model thats still a special order if I remember correctly.

No, but I would ask Benchmade if Benchmade made a knife with one certain Spyderco feature.

What's the harm in that? Or what I did?

They don't have any models quite like that on the regular inventory I don't think. However, there is no harm in asking friend! Himalayan Imports does in fact make custom orders. Contact Yangdu and ask her if they will be able to make you a Khukri like the one you want. They're very customer oriented and might be able to help you out. It may be a touch more than their stock Khukris but you'll be getting HI quality after all. I hope this helps!

Nothing. You're looking for a specific feature and want it on a HI knife. Rather than settling for a company with a less than great reputation, you came here. I see no issue with that. You made a good choice in Khukri Manufacturers. And, Benchmade does actually make a some knives with that certain spyderco feature. In fact, it could be because someone requested it, or they saw it as a design feature that could bolster business for them. :D Good luck getting your Khukri grail buddy.

Closest you'd get to a western handle on an HI khuk would be those Foxy Follies with the "JW handles" as I think they were called.

Moving Thread to the Cantina and modified link to just show pic.

C.S. Graves is correct The Western Foxy folly would be the closest to that type of handle that H.I. has made as yet.

Ok, thanks.

Warty, the .pdf link doesn't work, I get an error saying that it's corrupted or not a .pdf file. Same with the .pdf link in the HI Links thread.

Thanks,

Al

Works fine for me. No errors. Check your computer, you may have a virus.

Doesn't work in FF 3.6.2 (just updated this morning) but it does for IE; might be a work thing....

However, I didn't find anything with the words "foxy", "folly" or "western" in the .pdf. The Jungle knife on the top of page 19 looks pretty close though.

Thanks,

Al

I'll tell ya Al, I have hit the full spectrum of handle comfort:)

Some are just perfect, some too small, a few too large and some have hot spots for me yet not for other hands that use them very hard.

I personally would keep an eye out for a CAK that you might take a bench grinder to the handle and customize it to fit your taste. Surely any wood handle could be ground to look like that pic.

Hope this helps,
Be safe,
Mark

HI will make custom orders. Though if you want it in a modern synthetic material the kamis probably don't have access to that.

Well, both of you guys bring up a good point that I was thinking about this morning:

How hard is it to redo the handle a gurki/gurkhi/khuukris/howeveryouspellit by taking off the old one and replacing it. Does anyone have a pic of a doo-hickey/whatchamacallit with the handle off?

Thanks,

Al

Look at the handle on the M43 model. You might like that. There's no ring in the middle. It "bells" out at the back a bit, but that keeps it under control while swinging. I have a Chiruwa Ang kola with that style handle I got in a deal of the day around Christmas. It's quite comfortable. There's also quite a sizeable contingent of M43 fans out there. Here's a link to the online store. Click the pic for a closer view. You'll see what I mean.

I don't have a pic, but they are out there. Generally speaking when it comes to HI khuks, you have to grind the bit of steel peened over the keeper at the bottom of the handle. Then you can boil the handle in water and carefully work it off the tang. You gotta be quick though, it likes to set up fast.

Do it in a pot you don't want to keep because laha makes a hellova mess.

I am using the same browser and the link works fine for me, FF 3.6.2

Of course, I use an Apple so I don't get virus issues.;)

Also, LAHA STINKS! Do your boiling OUTSIDE

Interesting look, but when swinging a kuhkri I prefer to have a little bit of a swell at the end of the handle to help to hold on to it. There is a reason the kuhkri handle is shaped that way.
