I'm trying to decide on which khuk I plan on getting next (which will be somtime in January) and I'm leaning toward a CAK but I was curious if I would be able to order it without the "ring" on the handle like the M43? Also do customizations like this cost more?

You can always email Yangdu to inquire about such things. She would be able to tell you if she can get you one and how much it will cost. Special orders can cost a bit more, depending on what they entail. If it's just the ring you want removed, there are a few threads floating around if you feel up to doing it yourself.

There's also the option of the "DIY" khuk, whereby HI sends you a knife with no handle, and you can put one on yourself. (Or have someone else do it, although that's a bit complicated.)

I think it would be easier to just get an M-43!

Probably, but there's something about the AK's look that I really like. That being said I do plan on getting both an AK and M43, it's just a question on which one I get first.

With some patient file work, the proper assortment of sand paper, and a little wood polish, I took the ring off my CAK. It looks fine as though it never had q ring. Pretty sure I could do the same with horn.

Just remember to go slowly on your modification project. You might find that after you remove a certain degree of the ring's edge, it will be just right. Or not. It's a lot easier to remove material than it is to put it back on.

I don't trust myself enough to modify it myself, but if I did, would the tang in the front and back of the ring need to be filed down?

You mean the Handle? If youre filing/sanding the tang you've taken off wayyyy too much.:eek: Most people that do this modification only take the ring off flush and smooth with the rest of the handle. Others just sand the ring down a little for more comfort and call it good.

When I was talking about filing the tang, I ment the part that stick out with the ring (the part where the red arrow is pointing).

I wanted to make the handle completely smooth.

The only time you'd have any tang to file down is on a Chiruwa style handle, with an exposed tang all the way through the handle.

Others have a full, through tang, but is not exposed, and you wouldn't be filing on it.

Since you're thinking about a CAK, then yes, there would be some metal to file down.

Oh, sorry...:o I wasnt thinking clearly because of the flu, i guess.
But Yeah, you'll need to file that down if ya want the handle completely smooth.
