Does HI use any other handles besides traditional?

I prefer handles that have some sort of guard to protect the hand. The traditional handles are definitely nice looking though. Would it be possible to have custom handles made by HI?

by traditional do you include these?

Maybe you should have a custom order from HI? Or perhaps have an HI blade made, and send the blade to a smith in Udaipur, such as Sandeep Singh (Fine Damascus & Koftgari Art) who can make a Moghul-style sword hilt for the HI kukri blade? I don't doubt the Kamis can do it, but I am certain that the smiths in Udaipur can, after all they make a lot more swords than they do heavy working kukris. Personally I prefer a guardless blade, it's better for chores... and I don't need to protect my hand from incoming blows from maces, swords, and spears, so I don't need a hand-guard... :D

Kurkris with guards tend to be few and far between, The Jiri was sold as a DotD not too long ago. You'ld have to contact Yangdu about custom work. you can see it here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=677740 . Im sure there have been others over the years but I don't remember them.

Unless my counting is wrong, or the listing just wasn't changed and actually did sell, as number 8 that should be still unsold.

I remember posting a guard-hilted khuk to the "Missing Pages" thread; I think it was the Bhimsen Thapa?

By guard I don't mean the kind like in the sword picture above that wraps around the hand. I only want a divider that separates the blade from the handle like in modern/western knives. Basically I would like a modern handle incorporated in the khukuri.

Many folk have this desire before they use a traditional handled Khukuri.

Very few of them worry after they use one for a while, at least in my experience with a correctly fitting grip.

Yea.. I'm afraid that my hand might slip. I don't have the best of grip. My hands are very dry and smooth so it tends to slip. So having the guard would take away my concern. Hopefully HI would make modern handles for their Khukuri one of these days, I'll be first in line to purchase one for sure.

Most slippage on khuk handles tends to be away from the blade, thus the bell or flaring of the handle at the butt. This helps keep the blade in hand. Khuks seem to me to be made more for chopping and pull type cutting, therefor no guard is needed.

I use a push forward type cutting normally. And if there is ever a need to stab something with my Khuk, knowing there is a guard would be very comforting.

I've done some extensive stabbing of tree roots with my CAKs and there are some things to watch out for.

Generally, if you choke up on the bell at the back end of the handle you can stab without real issue. I do have numerous sore spots from the ring section of the tang where my skin pinched. I would think that this isn't an issue on a non-Chiruwa style handle. My hand never slipped forward onto the blade, but I did suffer minor damage from the bolster.

One thing to note. Depending on your model you may be disappointed with the stabbing abilities of your Khukuri. Stabbing straight down with the blade facing inwards was inaccurate and ineffective. Stabbing straight down with the blade facing out was slightly better. Stabbing or thrusting horizontally I can't honestly comment on.

I also lost a small section of tip on one of the CAKs. If you're super worried I would e-mail Yangdu and ask if she has anything to suit your needs in stock. Otherwise, I might give their normal offerings a try.

Best of luck.

This being the HI forum, I'm probably treading a fine line here, but if you want to consider another manufacturer, there is a guy who sells khukuris made to his specifications from a well-known Nepal-based Khukuri manufacturer. He offers several variety of handles, some of which have the kind of guard you are looking for. He sells on ebay and frequents other forums that discuss khukuris and similar big blades. He has received consistently good reviews & praise for his khukuris, as well as for his stand-up dealings. Maybe worth considering if a guard is a must-have necessity for you?

... and now I duck for cover!!!
