I have Gerber Yari I've owned for years. I really like the knife, but I wonder if The Kydex sheath actually dulls the thing?

154CM steel.

I have never had a problem with the kydex dulling the blade but the dust and dirt that gets inside will.

kydex is softer than brass and copper, and if you slide a blade along a piece of either there will be no change in sharpness (slide saw style, not cutting style). as such, kydex should not dull a blade.

but i agree that junk that gets inside the sheath will dull a blade if it's bad enough.

If the edge keeps knocking to the inside of the sheath while you carry the knife,
the edge can be damaged.
And with some dirt mentioned in previous post, this kind of sheath
is actually not a sheath, an edge destruction machine.

If the edge touches the sheath but stays still, damage will be quite limited and maybe ignored.

Of course it dull the edge! Question is what sharpness is acceptable for you. Any sheath were edge is in contact with some material will dull highly sharpened edge. But if you are not performing surgery but like cut wood it is not a big problem.

But you may check this very easy - cut some kydex and see if it does or does not affect the edge.

Thanks, Vassili.

Get a properly made Kydex (or Concealex) sheath and your blade's edge should not touch the sheath material. I'm not partial, of course:D, but Normark's sheaths are state-of-the-art IMHO.

Alberta Ed, how does one get in contact with Normark? I have sent 6-7 emails over the last year and have not gotten one response.
