Does it offend you...

When you come across someone who is into knives, but they only consider knives to be weapons? The only thing they have in mind when it comes to blades is how effective it would be when attacking another person... Does it offend you?

I know it offends me and I think it plays a terrible image on the knife community, and I always make sure there are observers when I try to tell these people that they are crazy and wrong.

How do you handle these types of people?

No it doesn't offend me, because many knives are made with that in mind. (protection, against man, or beast attacking the bearer, it's a valid reason to carry) It doesn't bother me anymore than it does, handguns being made for their effectiveness in a gun battle. What would offend me is the person owning it, being irresponsible with either. That to me is the important factor.

Kind of sorta. At first at my job, my co-workers were the people that would say "those are weapons and shouldn't be allowed." I told them only if you use them as such. I use them as cutting tools. Now look who they come to when the need to open some boxes and packages. :) People just need to learn to get over it. It also helps if the knife you're using doesn't look scary.

That's what it inevitably leads to though. This person considers knives to be weapons, and clearly knows little of them and how to properly manage them, and will eventually get their hands on one.

And they will get locked away, along with the others that can't be trusted to use good judgement.

It doesn't offend me but it is disappointing. I just politely humor them & their comments but keep mentioning the details that interest me. Keep bringing up the steel, ergonomics, edge geometry, weight, high-tech materials, ect. Folks with legitimate knife nerd potential will have a light go on when you talk about these things. They may have never been exposed to that side of things. The other sort shouldn't be encouraged & I tend to bring up other, more suitable kinds of weapons for their fantasy scenarios.

You know baseball is basically an old contest between those who prefer to smash something with a club and those who prefer to throw rocks very hard. :D

No it doesn't offend me any more than people with carry permits. Besides, I like to know who's packing and who's the karate experts. Don't like surprises. ;)

I don't whip out my big scary tactical folder, in front of a bunch of little old ladies and show it off. No more than I would my pistols. I have knives I use to cut with and knives I only carry, just in case. I don't feel it's necessary to explain myself to the general public. There's always some people that will be frightened by an object. I don't understand it, but there is some really meek individuals around and all I can say is tread lightly in their presence.

A knife like this, isn't designed as a tool anyway. There's differences in knives, some are indeed are designed as weapons. Some more as a cutting tool. But, they still all can be used as either. I wouldn't carry this and use it freely in front of everyone for every day cutting tasks. I doubt many would. So, it begs the question, just why would you buy it?

Of course knives have an aspect of use as a weapon, but I'm talking about people who see knives as only a weapon.

If that's what they like about knives, no it doesn't offend me. They can enjoy that aspect of knives all they want. Like I said many people like handguns that are designed only to defend with, so if some only buy knives for weapons, it's fine with me. I like both aspects, weapon and tool.

Good advice and I would say this is how I use my knives as well. I always have one for cutting and another primarily as a self defense tool.

If for some reason I'm unable to carry concealed (pistol) then the self defense knife goes up in size. Just in case.

The main thing is to not advertise as it's bound to invite trouble in some form or another.

I guess it's something I just don't agree with then. I'm too passive to give the weapon part of a knife too much legitimacy.

I even gave thought to the weapon part of my Gerber Clutch multi-tool... :p nah just kiddin

I'm passive too, but I'm not going to die for the sake of passiveness. I'll always look for an out, rather than shooting, or sticking man or beast. But, if I have no choice I'm going to fight for all I'm worth to live. So, yeah I do like knives as weapons and I own some I carry for that purpose. Just as I carry a handgun, to defend myself with, if need be. If people have a problem with either, too bad. Because I'm doing so 100% legally.

What about all these knife companies, that come out with all these models that are more weapon like, than tool? Should we be offended at that as well?
