I know benchmade has the lifesharp service, but doesn anybody know if Kershaw has a similar thing? I can't seem to get my avalanche back to its old self (after it encountered a granite table, I got it pretty close, but then I let someone use it, and they used it on metal wire (more like cable) and I just can't seem to get it completely back, especially the tip. Are there any people out there who can make knives scary or spooky sharp for me (for a fee of course)? Not only is this knife giving me trouble now, but I'm usually an 8 hour drive from my spyderco, and I don't want to have to buy another one (I just use a dogbone for basic sharpening when away from the sharpmaker).
Thanks,
Richard

Richard, even your Sharpmaker won't fix the dings in the edge as you discribed. The Sharpmaker is designed for touch ups and maintaining the edge. If your budget is restricted, pick up a Lansky with the diamond stones. If not, go with the Edge Pro Apex. Around $125.
Most of us have gone through many sharpening systems and you could really save some $ by getting the Apex first. Plus you can sharpen your kitchen knives and everything else. Sharpening is half the fun of being a knife nut. :D

There are no more dings in the blade, but it's just getting to much of a pain in the butt for me to try and sharpen this knife with the sharpmaker. After the granite incident, it was like new except for the tip, which was still pretty close. After the metal incident it became so blunt that I couldn't physically cut myself with the knife. Now I've got it to the point where most of it is pretty sharp, but that's only after doing the 30 degree once and the 40 degree 3 times. The tip (well, the tip plus the 1/4 inch of blade before it) is still ridiculously dull. While sharpening is fun, when it takes hours to bring a knife back, it gets to be such a pain in the ass that I rather just have someone do it. As far as buying another sharpener, I'm too strapped for $70 diamond spyderco rods let alone a new sharpener (I'm a mere college student). But for the future, sky being limit where money is concerned, is Apex THE best sharpener?
Thanks,
Richard

Yes, Kershaw will sharpen your knife.
I sent my Whirlwind to be resharpened about three months ago and it was returned in less than a week and it is SHARP!! I sent them an email and they gave me the service/repair address (can't find it now).

If it is taking much longer than a minute with the Sharpmaker then you are not hitting the edge with the hones, or the edge is seriously damaged. To accompany the Sharpmaker get a very coarse abrasive to remove nicks and alter bevel profiles, this can be a $5 axe hone or some x-coarse sandpaper attached to a wooden block (80 grit).

Use the x-coarse hone to alter the edge angle down to under 15 degrees, you only need to eyeball this, it doesn't have to be accurate or precise. The knife does not need to be sharp, the edge just has to be formed. It doesn't matter if you are a little less on the angle but it can *NOT* be greater. This can take some time depending on how much material needs to be removed.

Once the edge has been formed then you sharpen it on the Sharpmaker which should take a few passes on the medium and then a few passes on the fine rods. If it takes more than this then not enough work was done on the coarse hones.
