Does Leatherman make cheap tools for anyone else?

I was in Target over the weekend and was looking in the sporting section at the knives and multitools when I saw a different looking Leatherman P4.

Upon closer inspection it wasn't a Leatherman at all. The packaging was clamshell and it looked untampered with to me. Inside the clamshell of this P4 packaging was some other small multitool. Unfortunately I can't remember the details and the name on tool, but it wasn't Leathetman. All other P4's on display were Leathermans.

So I go to thinking how could a non-Leatherman tool end up in a sealed Leatherman P4 packaging?

On another note: do think it would be worth anything as a collectors item?

Was that possibly at a Target store in Columbus, OH? A few weeks ago I returned a Squirt which had been replaced in its minimally disrupted blister pack but was inadvertently turned around so the trademark didn't show. If it had been returned to stock, maybe it could have been mistaken for a counterfeit.

Or maybe some dishonest guy switched out a POS for the P4, cleverly so it wouldn't be noticed easily.

Doubtful collector value.

Sounds to me like someone switched the tools out. I used to work at a Target in college and that sort of thing happened all the time. Someone would buy something, open it carefully, then swap it with a piece of worthless junk. Then they could return it and get their money back. they'd only be out a piece of junk they had lying around. When you return stuff to a store, especially around Christmas, the people at Guest Services don't pay any attention to what you brough back. I've seen multitools returned with a pair of plyers stuck in there, toys returned with cheap pieces of generic toys put back in there. One lady brought back Power Rangers toy. It was carefully closed and looked factory, but inside there was an old beat up Tonka truck to give it some weight. People do a lot of crazy stuff to get around paying for things.
I could be wrong though.

i still work at target while in college for there theft department and that sort of thing happens all the time you could if your feeling like a good samariten tell the store but buying it would be a bad idea........

I noticed a knockoff of a juice tool in another department in a Target store nearby. If it is in an original Leatherman package then someone may have traded them out. Either way I would not buy it.

I think Leatherman only produces products with their name on it.
They have in the past and currently produce some special tools for certain customers such as Cosco's Juice and Radio Shacks E4 electricians tool
Hope that helps,
Kap

OK, I was back at the Target in question today and it was still there. After examining the packaging again I can confirm that it had been opened so it looks like as Jake had said: someone had swapped the Leatherman with a cheapo tool.

All people that do bad things to Leathermans would get life with out Multi tools.
