does my knife suck?

I just read on another forum about different locking mechanisms, and liner locks (like the one on my knife) rated last. I've got a CQC7. Did I get hosed with an inferior product?

I don't know if other liner locks are similar, but I'm afraid that I will disengage it with my index finger were I to be in a combat situation. Anyone else have that concern?

I've got a Benchmade Emerson CQC-7. I've used it a lot, hard use, but not in combat. It's never come close to failing, not that I put pressure on the back of the blade. But I wouldn't trust my life -- or my delicate digits -- to an ordinary liner lock, although some of them are sturdier than others.

Any folder lock is a compromise. The integral locks, rolling locks, axis locks, and arc locks are less of a compromise than a flimsy liner.

But fixed blades are for fighting or chopping, folders are for convenience.

You didn't get shafted. Any of the CQC-7s are great knives. Just don't push them beyond reason.

Relax.

Unless it's defective a liner lock that fails is on a knife that is being used for something for which it wasn't intended. While liner locks aren't as strong as other lock types they are strong enough for a pocket knife.

CQC-7 is a fine knife. Liner locks are good enough for most uses.

"Does my knife suck"..... well, hopefully it just cuts.

Hmmm, on second thoughts, it sucks big time. In fact it's so bad that I'll offer to take it off your hands, for free! I'll even pay the shipping.

Got you thinking now..... "Maybe it doesn't suck after all"

Ors,

No, your knife doesn't suck. Of all the liner locks I've used the Benchmade CQC7 models and the AFCKs have been some of the most reliable. If you have any doubts about it, tape it to the end of a stick in the open position, and do the worst that you think you will ever do with the knife in your hand. If the lock holds, it is a great confidence booster. I usually stab the knife into a board and twist it out (that is twist as opposed to snapping sideways), bang the spine against a bench top, stuff like that.

With any folder though, you should keep its inherent weaknesses in mind. Practice avoiding putting closing pressure on the blade.
