I have been to four hardware stores and when I ask if they have Sandvik (or any other brand) cabinet scraper's I get a blank look. I can buy them online, but I need one now. I have on at my house but I am two hours away. Do people not use tried and trued tools any more?

Tools?

Ha ha ha ha ha .

Actually, yes. I have a hardware store on the corner here that probably has hem. He carries that sort of do-it-yourself gear. But the store has been here for at least two generations. They do things the old-fashioned way. :)

annealed,.... forged to shape, ..... heat treated,... tempered hard,...

In Rhode Island, this outfit should have all the scrapers you need:

There are alot of these Rockler outfits which have them on the East Coast too:

Thanks friend. I am in Massachusetts right now trying to restore a clock for my dad. I get frustrated when I cannot find a tool or hardware that I know is sitting in my tool box. I can jerry rig something but I rather not. This tool is $8 at the most. Would it kill the big hardware stores to have a few in stock?

he beat me to it.
+1 for Rockler and Woodcraft if there's a storefront close by.

Thanks all. I rigged one from some metal that was in the basement. I am still not happy that the local hardware stores are clueless.

A while back, I wanted to buy two Stanley tungsten scraper blades, yet none of the 7 or 8 professional decorators and woodwork suppliers I visited had one, nor had they heard of them!

I ordered a pair (they're only sold as a pair) and it came to $26:57 (£/$ equiv.) I guess that's why they were not widely stocked.

Funnily enough, I wanted 'em to attach to some Doan Magnesium Blocks!

While were on the subject of things stores should have, scrapbooking stores don't carry #11 X-Acto blades. They expect you to use scissors on $10 paper? Crazy!

They are one of those things that you just rarely see in hardware stores these days, which is pretty amazing considering how versatile and easy to use they are. :( On the off chance that you ever find yourself needing one in my neck of the woods let me know. I have a couple dozen.

Sometimes second hand stores or other "junk" stores have old forgotten tools. Usually in a rusty wheelbarrow or bucket over on the far wall.

I learned to use them when I was in junior high school. I still use them. What a great tool!

Try using an old plane (hand) blade as a scraper.
