Does oil / CLP effect Carbon Fiber scales?

Does oil / CLP effect Carbon Fiber scales?

I typically oil my knives with Break Free CLP. I do so mainly for corrosion prevention of the blade and other metal components like steel liners & springs but also for function enhancement of moving parts like the pivot.

I've found Break Free CLP to be very effective in preventing corrosion and a very good oil as well.

My question is how will oil / CLP effect Carbon Fiber scales effect if at all?

I don't own any knives that have CF scales but am considering a purchase. I know oil or CLP has no effect on G-10, Zytel, Noryl / Grivory but have seen it darken Micatra. So I was wondering, if it gets on the Carbon Fiber scales will it have any effect?

Would appreciate any input from those with knives with CF scales that have oiled their blades.

Thanks!

Common gun oils or solvents I've used have no effect on my knives with carbon fiber handles. CLP works as an excellent rust preventive on knives. I've found that Eezox, another gun cleaner and lubricant, just might work even better. It seems to attract less dust and cling more persistently.

If anything, it will make it look better. I wouldn't worry about it.

Micarta darkening goes away if you wash Micarta in soap and water. Micarta will soak up oils/water/whatever, but only the first layer is effected, so it's easy to wash away. A lot of people don't understand this. That said, I usually leave the oil on it. The darkening goes away on it's own and the oil soaked in to the first layer keeps it from getting dirty so quickly.

Appreciate the info thanks!

I've been using CLP on firearms for over 26 years and you're right, does a great job preventing rust.

As I always have some around been using it on my knives too. Was just wondering how or if it would effect CF scales. Good to know it's ok to use.

Thanks again!

Not scientific, but I haven't seen any change or difference with my carbon fiber. The first time I sprayed some micarta down with clp, I was a little worried. At first I thought I liked the linen with the dark oiled look, but then changed my mind. I was relieved when I discovered that soap and water cleaned it up pretty good.

But I would imagine that most smooth carbon fiber would simply repel basic lubricants. I've only had one knife with a rough finish CF, but only had it for a few days, so never got the opportunity to really test it out.
