does parks 50 need to be preheated at all?

using it to HT 1095, my shop is pretty cold now. What temperature should the oil be prior to quench?

Here's the exact quote from the Parks 50 data sheet:
"The recommended operating temperature range is ambient to 120F."

I get much better results having my parks 50 at room temp for fast quench steels and warming up my canola to 120 for slower steels like 01

We heat our parks to 100° before quenching. Gives us a consistent base to shoot for in summer and winter. Works really good at that temp.

Thank you for the replies. Its cold 25-35F when I start. I warmed it up to 80, as the first try and steel is hard. Probably is good idea to keep temp same winter and summer, so 70-80 seems like a good target for me.

I heat a railroad spike and drop it in my quench tank of Parks 50. I've found that one good hammer ready heated spike in a gallon or two of Parks will bring it generally to 115 - 125.

Hope your using more then a gallon of oil to quench in.

I just rebuilt my quench tank with a digital PID. It has an electric water heater element in the bottom and get's heated to 80F, though I've debated even warming it up a little beyond that to start.

I may also eventually add a circulating pump and an oil cooler, though for the amount of blades I usually do at a time, it's not currently needed.

No mater which oil is in question , temperature of oil will change quenching speed .Because viscosity of oil change with temperature ........

If you read the data sheets on quench oils, some will specify preheat to be done with a max energy rating.
ie, every red hot spike reduces oil life.
