Does Randall forge their stainless blades?

I thought I read some where that at one time Randall forged their stainless blades. Is that true and do they still forge stainless?

Hey fellow Montanan; yes, on most of the larger blades, I think the exceptions are the Model's #9, #6-9, and #10-7 - traditionally stock removal knives. On the shorter, thinner blades, still yes in many cases - exceptions being the modern miniature series, smaller caping knives, and the like...

That's what I've heard at least...

I have a Model 4,stainless I bought in 1962 and a Model 16, I bought in 1964. Both look like they have been forged. I purchased a Model 12 Sportsman's Bowie in 1980 also in stainless and I know by then they had gotten away from hand forging. With the Model 1, purchased in 1960 (carbon steel) you can really see the hand forging. Thanks for the info fellow Montanan.

Doc,

You're welcome, and close...you wrote; "I purchased a Model 12 Sportsman's Bowie in 1980 also in stainless and I know by then they had gotten away from hand forging." which, FWIW, isn't exactly true...

All (as in all) of the RMK blades made from 1/4" steel (it starts that way but ends up a little thinner) including the stainless steel versions, are still forged...including those made in the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, etc...

The hammer marks are a little (ok, a lot) less noticible on most Randall knives made from the late 1960's forward, but my understanding is that if it's made from 1/4" steel, it's still forged...

RMK's current shop foreman posts here regularly under the handle 'dirty water'...if I'm incorrect here w/my post above DW, please correct me...

Doc, I see from your location you're in Butte; I'm just north of Bigfork off MT Hwy 35, just before you get to the Glacier Hwy 206...

If you would, provided that you still have it, I'd like to see a photo of your 1962 Model #4, and am interested in knowing if the blade has any steel type indicator marking (i.e. SS)...if so, I'd be very interested in knowing what month in 1962 the knife was received, and if you have any Shop documentation to that effect?

Also, a photo of the both sides of the sheath would be extremely helpful too...I can guide you thru the photo posting process if you'd like, or post the photos for you if you'd prefer...

Thanks in advance,

Shel

It does not have and S on the tang opposite the Randall mark. I will try to take a picture of the knife and post it here. I had it made with a rosewood handle and finger-grips. The Model 16 does have an S on it.
